Noisy Avensis

I have a 1997 Avensis and it has had a noise from the

transmission for the last two years. It occurs when the

car moves from stationary and lasts for approx 5 secs.

My local dealer has diagnosed this as 'clutch howl.'

I have never heard of this before and it sounds like the

car does indeed have a box of nails under the bonnet.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or gremlin?

Martin Watts.

I had the problem like this. But 'clutch howl' started not only when starting from stationary, but also when change gears on low speed (1st or 2nd gear, 1000-1500 rpm). One more thing - something jingles when engine stops. I did nothing for couple of months untill begin to feel vibration on clutch pedal. Mechanic listened and says that it is necessary to replace the clutch. What exactly in clutch? With regard to the cost of work, it would be cheaper to replace the complete clutch once and forget about it. I bought new complete clutch, he dismantle the car and find the reason - damper mechanism went to pieces, consequently breaking release bearing, disc and cover still not bad. The damper mechanism is delivered only in flywheel assy and costs really fortune. God damn previous owner!

Not sure where the word "Avensis" comes from but I don't think it's a Latin ending, so I'd like to assume it's Greek, in which case the plural may be Avenses or Avensides.
