96 Corolla Rear Light Removal

my neighbor asked me to help her replace the bulbs for her rear lights on her 96 corolla and I can't figure out why I can't get the light casing out... I unscrewed the two outside bolts and the one on the inside as well... then there seems to be two thick plastick pieces that come through the sheet metal on the side of the inside of the truck that's keeping the whole thing from just sliding out... since it's not my car I don't want to force anything or hammer the damn things through the sheet metal... is there something I'm not seeing or are they designed to just be banged out?...

thanks in advance for any help...
