Hi all

my dad is viewing this car for me tonight :

1992 TOYOTA MR2 2.0 GTS TURBO,

1992, J reg. 66000 miles, red, e/w, e/m, remote c/l, ac, alarm, immobiliser, twin 4 exhaust, dump valve, taxed, tested, baby forces sale. £2,895 . o.v.n.o. (work) (mobile).

Tel: (01296) 334334 or (07940) 830523

Distance: 2 miles

Price: £2,895 ovno.

Called the chap and he says the only fault on it is that the air con needs re-gassing - anyone know what this involves and how much it would cost to put right properly?

Re gassing - I think you're looking in the region of £60 - £80 which is what it cost me a couple of years ago, can't recall exactly. That should be ok, the only problem is theat the system could have a leak, which will make it more costly to repair. Get you Dad to check out the front radiator (this is the air con one and is behind the front grill) for signs of damage - unfortunately there is no protection for this as standard and it can get bettered badly by stones etc which can cause leaks.

Do you really want aircon?

I am always dubious when I hear re-gasing, as you never know if it will be that simple, could also be a dodgy compressor etc.

My old celica didn't have aircon and I was told that it needed re-gasing, which I payed for elsewhere, the aircon then worked for 2 days. Turned out the system had lots of leaks and it was a stupid amount of money to repair, so managed without aircon.

When buying my MR2 on a test drive the aircon did not work. The garage re-gased it before i bought the car and it has been fine ever since.

So give the aircon system a good looking over, including pipes, or take it to an aircon specialist for a quick check. If you are not too bothered about aircon and you want the car, then get the price reduced.

Maybe get your dad to ask them if it just needs re-gasing, then why hasn't the seller done it, especially as it is summer.
