Redex

I have a 99 1.8 avensis - is it worth using redex or similar to keep the engine clean every now and then or is it a waste of money with modern engines and petrol. I used to use it when put in the inlet in the carb when I had an escort many years ago and seemed to worked (I presumed the black smoke pouring out the meant it was doing something!!) but is it worth it now??

i use it from time to time, never really notice much difference but mine is quiet low mileage and regulary serviced

its not going to break or damage it so its worth a shot, literally

Modern lean burn engines do not need extra additives. i would not use redex or any other additive in a modern car engine.

Unless you've put bad or contaminated fuel in your car you don't need to use this. Fuel injected engines do not tend to coke up, this is for carburetted engines with manual chokes. Plus any additive has the potential to contaminate or damage the catalytic converter, even engine oil aditives.

At Toyota service they add their own additive anyhow, so I would suggest that they consider it to be of some use!!

Name that additive ....... Oops not that one! .... I will have a guess that it's Forte.

To Mops1.

You don't give your milage. I'm not a big fan of additives, but i would go along with T-spiritpete on this one, Forte getting good write ups. Beg to differ with modern injected engines not choking with carbon build up, this is a natural produce of the 4-stroke engine cycle. I pull heads all the time that are full of carbon. The simple reason for not doing de-cokes anymore is you spend more time removing all the ancillary parts & sound proofing covers than it then takes to remove cyl/heads. The days of easy access cross flow engines are long gone. Or maybe it's where i live, the fuel is pure crap.

Regards, Beagh.
