 ok so since i had my new engine in the car its been great . Slowly doing a few mods , most recent being the full SS exhaust . I had the car mot'd begining of june - passed fine , no problems , bit low on oil - hadnt been topped up since the engine was done in Oct 05 ! i've checked every few weeks but it's been fine . Sooooo took the car into the garage today to check everything and i'm amazed to see its used about 3L of oil ! its almost empty.............now i know it was full 4 weeks ago !

Why has this started ? could the new exhaust be a factor ?

Any ideas please......

Chris

oh dear

keep an eye on it - the 7afe engines all use oil so maybe with the 3sfe engine sharing the same block it might suffer from the same problem.

The exhaust shouldn't affect anything unless they smashed your sump putting it on

what did you have done to the engine in 05?

I'm supprised the oil pressure warning light didn't come on if you were down 3 litres

I'm surprised too ! :o

Long story - i bought the car off eBay from a prat in leeds , drove it home fine , next day big end went........new engine ! - he didnt tell me the head gasket had gone and he bodged it himself and didnt mention it was a 3sfe - fair enough i should have asked but he had it on as a 2.0 GT . At the time i didnt know the difference....

Its got a TRD panel filter too but thats it.

Another question... The guy who did my engine (an excellent mechanic) told me today not to bother with the lowering springs on my car , he reckons it messes up the celica's handling . Hes fitted them to a few before , for the owners to return a week later and ask for the standard springs back on  ........ hes almost put me off having it lowered :crybaby: is it true ?

Thanks

Do you drive the car hard?

The 7AFE in my Corolla used to use oil when I was booting it, now my Mum has it, it hasnt used a drop ;) Maybe its the same with the 3SFE?

As for lowering springs, not on a Celica, but i fitted some to my Corolla along with shocks and it transformed the car

sounds like hes being a grumpy old man that doent like to see the younger people modifying their cars....?

Mine handled awesome when lowered and i would never have gone back!!!

Of all the people that have lowered their celicas on here and celica club, i have not heard of one changing back to stock

I'm going to go partly with the mechanic on that one... I mean have you got any problems with the celicas handling as standard?? Have you ever found it's limits?? Toyota Spent a lot of time and money perfecting the suspension to give the best comprimise between comfort and handling. You can improve the handling but you will lose comfort and unless you've reached the limits of the stock handling there isn't much point improving it.

Now the reason most people Lower their cars is for looks - they use the "handling" reason to justify it to people who think they're idiots for spending hundreds just to make their car an inch lower

Don't forget there will be some added costs if you do lower it. You won't be able to go for tracking at a normal garage as the geometery of the car will be altered so you have to go to a specialist which in turn costs more

I'm starting to sound old now :lol:

-------------------------------------------

oh yeah back to the oil issue. If it helps my 7AFE uses more oil in the summer than the winter - ie the hotter it is the more oil it uses

There still is no fault with my engine though as the original user manual that was given with the car 10 years ago states very clearly that it will use up to 1litre per thousand miles. So they know about the problem

Damn right , i almost bought a 3sge - but me being stupid reckoned i was best to replace it with the same type 3sfe ............. hindsight GGGrrrrrrr :!Removed!:

Thanks Sotal - I must admit  mainly lowering it for looks :jockey: total poser , i was under the impression lowering springs and a bit of strengthening ( strut ) would help the body roll a bit ??

I'm still unsure to the oil problem though , if they share the same block then why up til now has my car not been using much oil ? Maybe your right about the summer winter thing , but i cant believe that it affects it that much ??

It's difficult to gauage exactly the difference between winter and summer as it partly depends on the type of driving.

I'm guessing that in Summer the car uses about 1 litre per 700 miles, in winter it's more like 1500 miles.

I don't use the motorway much but the manual says that high speed driving on the motorway will increase the appearance of oil consumption.

Lowering should lower the center of gravity which in turn I guess would decrease body roll - do you get any body roll on the Celica?? The better solution to reduce body roll would be to get a Rear Strut brace from a GT4 and get a front strut brace as well.

I don't think they are the same block?

And it's the pistons that are important in the 7a-fe engines oil consumption. I'm pretty sure they don't have those in common with the 3s-fe.

Is it the head that it shares then?? I never can remember but you are probably right now I come to think of it as it's the "fe" economy head.

OK it probably isn't that then as Mike is right that the reason the 7afe consumes a little oil is due to the fact that it has crappy piston rings (or so we believe).

It's getting a little over my head now :D but thinking more it can't be the same block/pistons as ones a 2litre and the others a 1.8

oh well

Losing that quantity of oil would show somewhere, I'd have thought - like leaving puddles or clouds of smoke out the back. All you can do really is keep an eye on it and see if it carries on at that rate.

I've noticed a quick white puff of smoke when i start the car occasionaly ??

quick puff off white is OK - that's just water vapour that's gathered.

oil will come out as blue smoke. The cat is supposed to be so hot though that after 5 mins of running (when it gets up to temp) that it will burn off all traces of blue smoke before it exits the pipe.

check out your spark plugs - do they look oily?

Check to make sure your oil isn't getting to your water and vice versa.

You could do a compression test to make sure all the cylinders are roughly the same.

As I said before mine uses about 1 litre to 700 ish miles at worst. Whilst using that much there is no noticeable oil anywhere - it doens't leak - it doesn't smoke, the plugs don't get oily and it passes the MOT emissions test straight off. I was told if the cat was burning the oil off then it would only last a couple of years at most before the cat failed and then I'd fail the emissions test - I've had the car for over 2 years and it's always done it - So I have no idea where the stuff goes??!!

No cat ! just a straight through pipe to back-box !

We checked the plugs that day and their perfect , will check the oil/water tomorrow morning and ask about the compression test when i drop the car off ! Thanks again !

The cars getting new tints tomorrow all round and some shiny new reg plates that fit ! with wee toyota badges :D

Well that's good that it's got a straight through pipe - but bad because it's got to go somewhere!

From how I see it - it can only go to 3 places. The first would be getting burnt which would give you the blue smoke - try various methods of labouring/thrashing the engine on a hill to see if that causes smoke - there is supposed to be a certain way that you do it but I can't remember :D

The second place would be just leaking out - is it running down the back??

The final place would be through the head gasket if that has gone but that would show mayonaise in the oil or the coolant and it would probably be overheating a bit.

Has it gone down much since?

I give up -

From what i can see/tell its not leaking anywhere  , i'll get it back tonight and try your hill method see if i can get some blue smoke. Certainly no oil in water or water in oil this morning , both look very clean - oil is still golden . Its gone down a bit since saturday, not too much but enough to notice half asleep that some has been used(I've only done about 50/60 miles since then) . Its gonna be annoying but i'm just gonna have to keep an eye on the oil level and always carry a can ! could be expensive

Thanks again for everyones input/ideas

A good method for testing whether the oil gets burned is to let the car run idle for a moment and then revving it (while still on neutral, of course!). There should be visible blue smoke coming from the tail pipe in case the oil does get to the combustion chamber.

Hope this helps! :)

One of the member of celica-club owns a place about 2 miles from my house i never even knew about !! Re-did my scabby old tints and added a sunstrip/new reg plates and did my driver and passenger side window at an excellent price !

Martin the mechanic who did the engine took me out for a spin in one of his soarer's.....!Removed! hell.....i've never been that fast and to be honest i dont wanna ever again .....*cough*160mph........scaaarrryyyyy

No blue smoke anywhere BTW ! just that occasional white puff on start up , me and my brother tryed on the street outside my house (quite steep) and all we did was ***** the neighbours off with excessive revs :rolleyes:
