A friend of mine is in the police and is trying to encourage me to join. Would it really be that bad?

Should I tell him a big NO

Do we have any police on the site?

Depends what he's going to aim for in there. A couple of the guys on the Nottingham armed patrol used to come into one of the places I used to program for and they seemed really into it.

Not a copper myself but I know a few folks who are and they all love it......

However - having to deal with drunk !Removed! abuse everyday doesn't sound like a good job to me!

Not much risk of redundency and a decent pension are about the only decent bits I can think of....

Why not? Decent enough job, plenty of future opportunities in the future such as moving onto a more specialised unit. Decent pay, pensions etc etc. I was considering it at one point and then moving onto the airport police/air support after i had finished my initial period (which is 2-3 years?). You must be considering it or you wouldn't have posted?

It's up to you, clearly there is a dire need for god peope to join the force.

There is however a duty/ethical stance on police that over rides all other relationships. You are in a pub and you hear something that is not legal you are duty bound to report it. Your mother tells you that after 25 years of watching her sister suffer she switches the life support machine off as she cant stand it any longer, you have a duty to repoprt this. You need to wrestle with this, some people are unable to achieve a balance, there is also a huge pressure on your personal relationship. Fore some reason the failure rate of marriages for police officers are extreemly high for whatever reason.

I have a mate that recently went for it and after going through the recrutiment process, tests, interviews, family interviews, and passing everything he was told that are are no places available for mainstream candidates The recruitment process is very protracted and involved, it takes in a great deal about you and all of your family background. I have a scallywag brother and I would have a difficult time getting through the process maybe I could not get through.

I did consider it and it was the family background detail that put me off, if I was successful I would have probably meant a move from this area (due to my family circumstances) and my wife was not into that at the time. I did speak to two police officers who told me the above and also told me it was the best move they have ever made, one of them strongly reccomended the MET for experience, and said the possible opportunities for employment of good ex-police officers was ever increasing.

It's not for everyone, but the ones I know love it.

My niece is in the force, as is her boyfriend ( except he has guns ! ). Out of all my relations I would have put her way down the list of ending up with the Police, but she's in........she's good at it and she loves it.

It's worth looking into if you have any interest in maybe going down this road - get all the facts and then make an informed decision. It can be a very rewarding career.

cheers for all the responces so far, it is only the realtionships with friends family etc that would put me off as they all seem to hate the police but due to how they drive, the illegal things they do etc

I did consider this... but in the end .. time passed me by.. and there was a deadline getting the app form in...

There is nothing wrong with traffic police tbh... ultimately you would be properly trained... think of all them driving courses... etc.. mmmm ;)

I really did fancy doing something like this.. its deffo worth considering... despite people's reaction 'oooh police' it can be fun ive heard :P

It's really a case of if you would like it, I personally have a lot of respect for the police but then I've only ever had brief, friendly chats with them so I've got no reason not to. I could never do it though, if I turned up at a house where it was obvious some1 had been abusing children or something as sickening I don't think I'd be able to follow official police procedures :boxing::2guns:

There's also the lack of respect from a lot of people that you'd have to deal with on a regular basis, people who'd go out of their way to make things difficult for you. I'm sure the feeling of taking evil people off the streets would be massively rewarding but it's something I couldn't do.

Hmm joining up - well 10yrs ago I would have said do it. Alas the Police service in england and wales are run by performance managers and stats and not by Police officers. It no longer matters if you are a good copper as long as you make the Insp look good by reaching X No of arrests/detections per week you'll do fine.

Plus notes are good pension although I think that has changed for new officers and you could always spend 5 years as a PC here and then transfer to Australia as they recruit british bobbies quite often (sponsorship and all paperwork sorted by them).

All in all a good job done by very few but very committed people - let down by the court system and the perfomance culture we live in.

I have a friend who's a police officer and she loves it, she's been in the force about 3 years now and thinks its great!

I guess you have to be very strong minded and not easily upset or rattled by anything. I dont think I could cope with, say a suspected paedophile or spousal abuse.... I'd get upset and/or angry, and you need to remain calm at all times and provide an unbiased view to any situation....

But as has been said, the police is an excellent career to go into, if you can handle it. I've thought about it myself in the past, but I know I couldnt handle it, I'm of too sensitive and emotional a disposition....

But if you want it, go for it....

It's a good thing to do if your intentions are good and your character strong enough to uphold the law fairly and across the board no matter who and how many you're dealing with. Otherwise you have no respect and no authority.

Ploice are well paid considering the overall package -- things really took a positive turn pay-wise during the miner's strikes of the 80s when the conservatives needed a lot of dirty work doing. It's rather like the armed forces -- there's a chain of command from the government down and on the wider scale you might not always agree with what you are told to do. But if you can accept that you are working as part of a system, it's OK.

It can be a stressful job for a whole host of reasons -- the pensions are good, but I would suggest some research into how long police live on average after retirement. Perhaps things have improved, but ten years ago you wouldn't need one hand to count the years.

There is nothing wrong with traffic police tbh...

Apart from the 85% of them that are completely unreasonable.. road laws in this country are WRONG!

Maybe they arent wrong, its just you dont agree with them which is a different story.

Plus your picking 85% out of your head when it could be 1% but they are the ones you have had a run in with. I have tried to put up a post about something I am thinging about seriously doing. Asking for answers on the idea not on your views of the police. Please either say something constuctive or say nothing at all!

Hou,

If it's a career that interests you, I'd say go for it. So many people moan about 'the police' and very rarely consider the tough job they do. A member of my family was in the force for years and now enjoying a healthy pension. His first outing was during the Notting Hill riots - talk about a baptism of fire! I won't lie - the increasing paper pushing and politics contributed towards his decision to retire, but that's probably due to the length of time he served and his earlier experiences (he retired as an Inspector). Earpl's comment about making a difference is a great one. How many people can say that their job 'makes a difference'?

I thought about being a bike blood runner for a while, but it seems to be difficult to get in to - dunno about the 4 wheeled side though.
