I'm just replying to that e-mail, to point out the tyres, washers, wipers air filter, and lights are fine, the car has no air con.

Coolant, according to the handbook, doesn't need a change till 90k miles, then every 2 years/ 54k miles.

Air filter doesn't need replacing till 40k, along with spark plugs.

!Removed! rip-off for an intermediate service. They've even managed to out-quote Inchcape in Kidlington, for the 20k service I asked about last year!

My reply:

Car doesn't need an air filter change (I've checked that), washers, wipers lights all work fine. There's no air con, and there's no light on the engine management light on the dash, which suggests to me everything is fine under the bonnet.

Tyres are fully inflated, and checked weekly, and the tyres are brand new on the rear, and only 6 months old on the front, with plenty of tread depth.

Handbook suggests that coolant only needs to be changed at 90,000 miles, so I wouldn't expect that to be required.

Air filter also doesn't need to be changed until 40,000 miles

The only replacement I would expect is of the oil and filter, and an inspection of the brakes.

In this case, how much would that cost?

Thank you.

I paid about £100 less than that for the 30k service on my car. That's just stupid!

As Jay says, mock them Gnomey!

And tell them you can get a Mobil1 oil change and filter at kwik-fit for £26.

Dunno if it's me, but it seems to be that anywhere in this part of the country, car garages always charge a fortune, for something that is actually an easy and quick job!

I'm aiming for the £100 mark, and then I'll be happy.

What i did was go on the toyota website and search for dealers in my area, got a quote from each one and went to the cheapest. dearest and closest was £198 from twickenham (never go there :ffs: ), and cheapest was £92 from bracknell  . £106 just for an extra few miles drive

Exactly what I've done.

There are 4 dealers I have contacted within a 20-miles radius.

I'll see what they come back with.

I'm betting Sims of Northampton will be cheapest. Then again, it's furthest away as well! :D

Sims in northampton are ok - just make sure that they start work on the car when they are supposed to (they have a habit of doing the yaris last).

That aside their parts manager is superb - hes got me out of the poo many times.

Yeah I did the same thing about checking various dealers that are a varying distance away! Furthest one was cheapest too - so annoying but at the same time worth it for the saving, even after taking petrol costs into consideration.

Oooh I'll remember that, beings as I'm back in Rugby now, I have a choice of Coventry (no chance!), Leicester and Northampton for my next service in January...

Let us know the price for Sims please John Boy - and best of luck with your search mate!

Well, nearly 24 hours (well, 23 really), since I sent out my e-mails to the dealerships, and only one reply.

Still no word from Sims (Northampton), Murley Auto (Stratford), Inchcape (kildington), and waiting for a response to my reply above, to Listers (Stratford).

Think I'll end up ringing them....

Will give Nuneaton a ring as well then, and see how they compare. If they're a fair bit cheaper, it may be worth going the few extra miles to them...

  • 1 month later...

Just an update.

Didn't hear back from anyone else via e-mail!

Car has just trickled over 30k this week, and as I'm looking at selling, I'd like to get it done so it's up to date, and will keep the car's value up.

Phoned round 4 dealers just now:

Sims - £119 before discount

Inchcape - didn't answer the phone after 2 mins of ringing, so **** 'em!

Listers (Stratford) - "I'm sorry luv, our service department closes at 1pm on a Saturday?!?!"

Murley Autos (Stratford) - £99.50 inc VAT

Think I'll go back to Sims.

Be a bit cheeky, but I'm thinking of supplying my own bits.

Oil & filter, so that's about £30 in total, so it's £60 an hour labour!

There seams to be a lot of complaining on this forum about "Dealership rip off service prices". I suppose all those complaining know about "Block excemption"? What this means in every day terms is that even if your car IS IN WARRENTY you don`t have to use a dealership for your servicing!! All you have to do is make absolutly sure that genuine Toyota parts are use for the service and you are fine. Just make sure that you keep all the recipts in your service pack for those genuine Toyata parts as proof of fitment. So the next time you feel that you are being ripped off by the dealers, ring the parts guys at the dealership (really customer friendly people these guys in my experiance) and tell them you what service you are doing. They will sell you all the parts required for that service. Then take your car with the parts to your local friendly mechanic/garage for them to do the service. It`s fine for him to stamp the service book as long as you keep the parts recipts. If you need to claim warrenty repairs and the dealer starts moaning about the service, just tell them to clue up on "block excemption". I save heaps using this method.

Yes, am aware thank you, which is why I took my car to a Toyota specialist instead of a Toyota dealership, as it's much cheaper, and I think the workmanship is better quality.

Thought I'd give them a try for an intermediate service, but they do make me laugh....

don't even have to contact the parts guy, when you can get the genuine parts from Envy, and get a discount with Gold membership! ;)

Well, Zanipolo is booked in with Murley Auto at stratford.

The really bizarre thing is, it's a different Toyota centre to Listers Stratford, but they're on the same road, if not next door judging by Mulitmap!!!

Quoted £99.99 for the 30k service, and am dropping the car off Tuesday evening.

New dealership to me, so hopefully I don't come back grumpy. ;)

Dropped off the car, and found out Murley is actually just across the road (literally!), to Listers of Stratford.

However, Murley is an authorised Toyota service centre, but it's actually a Hyundai garage!

So my courtesy car is a Hyundai Getz, 1.1.....

The 30min drive home showed this car corners better than my Yaris, has more space inside (then again, it's a slightly bigger car all round), but my God, it's slow! Slower than the aygo I had from Inchcape!

Still, at least the service price (so far), is reasonable, and I'm not having to pay for my courtesy car!

The guys in the dealership didn't make me wait either, like I've had to at Inchcape.

So far, it's looking good for Murley Auto....

Well, service all done, and the news is good.

Total price was: £108.88

A bit on the pricey side compared to other parts of the country, but round here, they would call that a Mutha hubbard bargain!

Breakdown of service: 30k miles

Screenwash £1.66

Drain plug gasket £0.78

Oil filter £7.00

Engine oil £20.54

Sundry materials £5.57

Air filter £11.94

Rear wiper blade £7.96

1 hour labour £37.21

Net total £92.66

VAT £16.22

Total £108.88

I'm quite pleased with that, considering the before VAT price of any of the other dealers was £110.

I've had to order 2 new tyres though, as the fronts are now on their limits, but the guys at Murley Auto's were very polite. The guy even showed me round the courtesy car when I took it away Tuesday evening, and they were very apologetic at having to make me wait 5 mins. FFS! I've had to wait 20mins at Inchcape before, and they've not said a word!

So, I'd highly recommend Murley Auto's of Stratford. You just have to put up with a Hyundai as a courtesy car (indicators/ wiper stalks are on opposite of steering wheel compared to normal cars).

Think I'll be taking my Yaris back to them next year.

Not too bad at all fella considering you were expecting a hefty sum alltogether!? You not fancy having a go at changing things like oil and the oil filter yourself??
