Yaris Auto-over Revving! Help!

Hi

i have a 2000 yaris with an induction kit and an exhaust.

now everthing was working amazing.

BUT, my induction kit fell off and it took me a few days to realise this. so basically i had no air filter going into the engine. and it was really sluggish.

i put the induction kit back and when i do a COLD START, when moving the car in 1st gear i put my foot down but the rev counter kind of jumps up and down and the car is not moving smoothly instead its bouncing up and down. jerking really badly even in 2nd 3rd gear. am putting my foot down as well. its as though its automatically putting the foot down then releasing it after a split second constantly. AFTER 5 mins the car drives fine!

so i changed the induction kit and put the standard toyota air filter in and it does the same thing!

its done 45000 miles and i have never changed the spark plugs. could it be that?

i need some advice please. could it be something to do with the air sensor? i.e does it need a clean and where is it!

ALSO, after drving like a madman i can smell a buringing smell but its different it smells like an egg stink bomb. really bad. dont know if that gives you any clues to whats wrong.

i've had the induction kit and exhaust in for a while and its been fine only since the induction fell off the car is sluggish and still is. its been a few days now.

thanks

Eggy smell is usually the Cat or Air Conditioning fluid burning on the radiator can give off a similar smell.

Your induction kit fell off and it took you a few DAYS to realise this?!?!

Strewth, some people are dumb.

You need to clean your MAF sensor for a start as thats probably jiggered from unfiltered crap you've let into your air-inlet. It's a small square with wires on which plugs into the air-intake pipe or the top of the standard airbox. Use a solvent cleaner or compressed air to clean that. Then re-set your ECU by pulling the fuse or disconnecting your negative terminal on your Battery for 10mins.

It'd be wise to run an intake cleaner through the engine too. Halfords do a product called '10k Boost' for about £15, just follow the instructions on the can... basically, you just spray it into the throttle body with the throttle slightly open. This should clear any build-up of crud in the inlet manifold. Again, re-set ECU and take for a good drive (motorway for an hour) and see how it is then.

If it's still buggered then you'll need to look at other things, but try that first. And fix your induction kit on properly.

Also... 'Driving like a madman' ... sounds sensible. The eggy smell is your CAT getting rid of the abuse you've thrown it's way. Because your car has been running a little 'lean' due to the intake problem, the CAT can store sulphur, then when you use heavy acceleration and get the CAT hotter than usual, this sulphur burns in a 'rich' operation, thus producing hydrogen sulphide which is what you're smelling as bad eggs.

It can also be too much sulphur compounds in cheap petrol. A product called Forte Fuel Gas treatment contains nickel oxide which can be sued to treat the problem. It's quite a specialised product though.

Hi

i have used the 10 k boost, cleaned the maf sensor and reset the ecu.

i have only done 7 miles when i reset the ecu. The car is not very responsive! i put the gas down and it takes a while to move and i can smell unburnt fuel.

i have been told i need to drive a bit more for it to get used to my driving.

please advise.

thanks

p.s - the engine management light has gone off! so the maf sensor should be fine.

You really need to give it a good long run......................as Graham advised

It needs a goooood drive!

When you re-set ECU it goes into it's most basic setting... you need to teach it your style and let it learn the conditions... a good drive sorts it out.
