Mmt Gearbox

We have a 2006 (new shape) Yaris 1.3 with the MMT gearbox and whilst we are quite pleased with the car as an improvement on the old model, we do find at times that the gear change leaves something to be desired.

The gears will change, both up and down at times when I personally would not change gear and on other occasions will not change down gear without using nearly full throttle.

Does anyone know if there is any adjustment posible, or if the system is software controlled, is it possible to have the 'brain' reprogrammed?

Thanks for any advice

This is the beauty of having a fully automatic gearbox!! Can't really help you but the eggheads will be along shortly to put you in the right direction!

Welcome to TOC!

Best guy to speak to is Red_Yaris_54

He doesnt have an MMT Yaris anymore, but had his MMT T3 for 2 years and knows more or less everything there is to know about them. He will probably be along soon or you could PM him if you like!

I'm glad in a way someone else doesn't find the gearbox that satisfactory. I have the new yaris MMT too and can't say I'm that impressed with it, infact I tried to P/X it this week and in 6 months it's dropped 50%!!! I couldn't believe it.

Wow that's a huge amount of depreciation, I knew that new cars all depreciate...but that's crazy :!Removed!:

Well you lose VAT as soon as you drive it away and part ex prices are always substantially lower than what it'd sell on for or you'd get for it private...

I paid £10,400 for my T-Spirit in December 2004 and its now worth about £6,500 (private) but about £5,600 for part-ex... gutting really but thats the way the cookie crumbles.... they'd sell the car on for £7,500 as well

Well it is now February 2007 and our Yaris MMT is still going strong, but the gearchanges are as eccentric as ever!

I notice that there has been a fair amount of correspondance about the MMT gearbox system in the Verso forum, most of it rather negative. It is a shame that there should be such a feeling of disatisfaction about what should be such a winner!

Does anyone know if there is a software / harware upgrade for these cars?

the MMT box is based on a manual gearbox which changes automatically, as opposed to a CVT (in the jazz) which is an automatic gearbox that changes manually

my dad has the phase 1 yaris freetronic and one you learn its niggles you can drive it smoothly ish, but the MMT isnt any better as said and it is a shame that companies are using these. the reason being it gives better MPG and is cheaper to make hence cheaper for the customer to get.

its very annoying as my dad wants to get an auto but companies are dropping them like flies and its very difficult to find an auto in a small to medium size car. he liked the auris but again its a multimode pile of crap

i would love to know why companies think a jerky cheap box is better than a smooth box which is a bit pricier, but i suppose its all about money. i also dont think they realise how much business they lose due to having no autobox as i have heard a few people unhappy about it across forums and in person.

sorry for the rant but this is a very annoying issue.

Well the fuel economy on mine is dire so I took it back and was told, it's an automatic what do you expect? I said well the brochure and the salesman both said the MMT did not use more fuel than a manual, the service guy basically said that was crap and I should be grateful I get 40mpg out of it, and it's a diesel one!!

The brochure spec shows the MMT as slightly more economical than the manual.................I would speak to them again.

Our consumption is OK, about 44 mpg and I am not complaining about this at all. What I want to know is are there any software modifications to be had which will improve the quality of the gearchanges?

All I am asking about is, can the gearchange quality be improved?

Have you tried speaking to your local dealer ?

My mum had shifting problems with her Focus and the dealer managed to sort it out with a software upgrade.

Hi I am new to this forum and I am really interested in this discussion. I am disabled and have to drive an automatic. I am not lazy as said in another thread only I am not able to push in a clutch!!! I currently drive a full automatic Yaris and have just had a test drive in the new Yaris and here is what I thought.

To start with it is easy to start off! You touch the acelerator and the car moves :yahoo: This may sound like a funny statement but when I drove a Citroen sensodrive your needed at least half throttle to get the car to move. This was extremely awkward at a junction because you didn't know when the car would move

Now the bad bit. Moving from 1st to second gear the car would jolt which it did when coming out of a junction. The dealer said to lift off the acelerator and it would change better but it was knowing when to lift. After driving a 15mins I did feel a bit sick. I was really disappointed and if Toyota got this sorted it would really be a fantastic system after all it says the gearchange is smooth.

I also noticed that the car would go to 5th gear very quick just like the above post. I was told this was to save fuel but it did make the car lifeless and unresponsive.

So now I have come to the conclusion that my next car won't be a Toyota :crybaby: because I could not live with the gear change compared to a full automatic and the only car that is now full auto is a Rav which is a bit above my budget.

So now the search is on for another make but alot of manufacturers are going down this route but some are coming back to full auto for example Renault have dropped their quickshift system in favour of a full auto but they might start using Nissan's CVT!

my dad also cannot drive a manual, therefore he is now heavily restricted on cars to buy, as he wants japanese and an auto, which is extremely difficult!

the cvt is great but its in the Shell of a jazz, hmm

I have hand controls and the automatic Yaris1.3.My last car before injury was a 2.1HD Citroen and I find the Yaris quite acceptable.Let the gearbox work its-self,give it plenty of throttle, hold in 3rd when necessary.I do lots of long distance runs(Swansea-Carlisle--5/6 hours 350miles,get 45-47 mpg).Ride is acceptable. And wheelchair fits in back with seats down.If you see Yaris with chair in back give me a wave.Dont try to impress me,I'll probably OUTDRIVE any one on these boards however FAST you may be!!!It's the beauty of being a wise old pensioner!!!

Was it 2 grand extra to upgrade tspirit?! crikey! didnt realise aircon and electric mirrors put the price up by that much

Ah-ha!, if it's a red T3 in the Cardiff area (usually) and a wheelchair in the 'boot' (you'll see it as the parcel shelf has to come out) with a big red 'T3' (T made from hexagons ala Torchwood (excellent series) logo) in the back window then give me a wave! lol (not quite a pensioner yet but I am a Grandad!)

I have asked a simple question about the MMT gearbox and is it possible to improve the quality of the gearchange.

The replies have been about anything other than the subject, usually some idiotic rubbish about grandfathers, or fuel consumption.

This Forum is a waste of space as regards sensible replies to simple questions.

Sorry that you feel that way about the TOC forum. People on here are always willing to share their experiences with like minded owners  I have sent you a PM on the subject

Maybe your simple question would have been better aimed at either the dealership where you bought your Yaris or Toyota GB..................they will have details of any updates available

It is extremly unlikely that any of the forum users would have such specialist software knowledge on the MMT gearbox ................................we have, however, got a very good Toyota community spirit :) :group-cuddles:

Please do not hesitate to visit again :)

  • 1 year later...

First of all , the MMT is not a true automatic it is a clutchless manual, as with most cars if you are stupid enough to have your foot nailed to the floor, it will be a jerky change, there is no torque converter as such, I was told by the dealer to lift my foot of the throttle slightly and select the next gear, it took me 2 minutes to get this right, saying that I have motorbike experience where the same is done for clutchless gearchanges. No software update will solve this problem. Saying that, its a good system around town, but a manual is a better gearbox for a smaller engine. It is easy to get used to. You don't see F1 drivers slamming the gears in, its all about smoothly changing the gears. My grandad taught me the priciple of driving without using a clutch and that was in an old truck......He wasn't an idiot trying to learn how to drive a clutchless manual!
