Mr2 Mk1

Hi, purely an idea as yet but I really, really have a desire to own an MR2 mk2... unfortunately I don't have enough cash to buy, maintain and insure it, i'm 19 in september with a years no claims so insurance is high on pretty much every car

So my other option is an MR2 mk1, I wouldn't be driving it as a primary car because i'll still have the yaris.. so there won't be 'too' many miles put on the mk1... i think :S lol :D

Can any of you wise MR2 people advise me on a decent price for a mk1, things i should look out for.. etc

I really don't have a clue about them apart from I want a rear wheel drive 2 seater sports car  (what are the performance figures such as 0-60 by the way?)

thanks alot

sam

How do, Who wouldn't want a Mk2, there the dogs B******S.

But insuance does'nt let u have any fun. Im 19 and own a Mk1, and i love it its got two 5" powerflows on it sounds and goes mint.

You should definitly get one if its a rear wheel drive car that your after, theres not much better for the price range and fun factor.

Look out for rust on wheel arches and the rear valance, try not to get a white one like mine apparantley they dont sell on as well.

Don't bother with early Mk1's 86 or newer are the revised ones.

0-60mph is 8.0sec flat with a good start, and trust me you'll be getting plenty of em these things get of the mark like shat off a shovel.

There not a fast as Mk2's but they handle better and in a year or two when i get an S/C conversion it will be faster......oh yeah.

The best thing about them is that they ***** on VTR's which is a big plus side, whatever you do dont get a VTR every f***kers got one.

One down side about Mk1's is that shat exhaust they've got it looks ans sound crap, get custom made one when it falls apart.

Have fun with that Mk1, mint cars,

AW11

My cars insured under my mum;s name so its £760 a year fully comp with protected no claims.

dont know how much it would cost on your own, try Adrian Flux there good for young drivers who actually want a decent car. :D

thanks aw11, it's ridiculous amounts of money in ur own name, £3300 was my best quote

going to try liverpool victoria later as recomended by rhaines, apparently excellent for insuring mr2's :)

We are all in the same boat. I am 19 and got a 1986 Mr2 i am also having trouble getting insurence.

Best quote was £1600 that was 3rd party on my fathers name me as second driver and 6000 miles a year. Whos best to try?

P.S I got my MR2 off a friend who owed me money to clear him it cost £160 only problem was the engine was gone all fixed now. It cost me £400 to get it back on road. Just needs a new clutch.

Wow. I'm from Canada, and I just read through this thread and saw all of your posts about insurance. That's insane. Y'all should move over to Canada! I'm driving an '86 Celica GT-S and I pay $600 CAD a year for insurance. $50/month. I think the exchange would be little better than 2x, so... £22 or so a month? Under £300 a year. How many of you are drooling right now? Lol. Sure, it would be more for your sporty MR2's, but probably not more than $800 or $900. And the part I'm from, we all have to buy our insurance from the government. There are 3rd party companies, but only for extended coverage. It's pretty good stuff I tell ya.

have you guy's tried Dorset?

You HAVE to be a member of the MR2DC (30 quid a year) but it's the cheapest about ..

And they allow mods and trackdays etc at no extra cost.

Mk1's are better then mk2's anyway

I have an aw11, im 20. Just took out my own insurance (been a named driver like aw11). So 0ncb. Alloy wheels, air filter and exhaust all declared, insured for £992 TPFT with HIC. Also includes track day cover, but there are massive excesses involved, and many rules you have to abide to.

Dorset wont insure you unles you are 21.

Mr2 has 1.6 16v twin cam, 122bhp, bout 975kg. Should do 0-62 in ~7.7s, and getting towards 130mph (not that that is needed)

You do realise you cant use your ncb on both cars? Can only use it on one. Best finding someone who will do specialist cover for both vehicles rather then 2 seperate policies.

Also, one tip - dont put cheap tyres on it - you will regret it when its wet. Also they are not cheap cars to run. great cars though.
