This is a fairly basic question.

What oil do people recommend? - I have a 1998 1.8 7A-FE auto and am about to do my first DIY oil change.

Thanks.

I recommend Magnatec 10w40 this oil will be perfect for the engine or you could go for toyotas own 10w40 available from dealers.

Castrol Magnatec 10w-40 comes in a green container.

Thanks for the advice.

I looked in the Haynes manual and it recommends 5w30. I also spoke to my local Toyota dealer who also said 5w30. I don't really understand what the different viscosity numbers mean.

Which should I use 5w30 or 10w40? Does it make any difference?

That is what the manual says 5w30 to 10w30. However my dealers always used 10w40 and so I've continued to do the same. Never had a problem with it...
