What is the limit of the RPM without knackering ya engine? Ive noticed when my friend puts hius foot down in his Mazda 323f Auto it changes gear @ redline so am i to think that it is 'OK' to go to red every once in a while? or take it easy.

Reason being, i like to hear my engine its such a nice noise! but my friends say i rag it too much 32,000 later from me buying the car and driving it the way i do, no probs (touch wood) its coming upto the 100k mark so shall i take care of her and drive sensibly?

It's all depending if you are going to keep the car much longer. Personally every now and again it doesn't matter to give the car a dam good trashing every now and again.

Driving cars around the towns all the time really clogs up cars. So it's good to give the car a good run just to clear out all that carbon from the exhaust and turn it white

Redline on mine is at 6 and a half would it be OK to go upto 6 or am i pushing it? and what really does happen when ya redline it!

I know on the yaris that if u push it to the red line it just bounces back so i don't think there is a lot of damage you can do, most of them are limited but there is little point in having an engine and only using say 75% of it all the time

good answer but whats the point in takin a gear all the way to redline if power starts to drop of at say 6 or 7 u might as well change gear at its peaks which is not always redline !!!!!!!

Does anyone know where it is on my carina? The peak that is.

Whenever i thrash the bugger 5000 to 6000 it feels like a turbo! you suddenly just get a burst of boost and it would seem to keep going.

This is the thing im tryingt o find out if the best of my car is around 5000 to 6000 mark is it sensible to go this high?

Long term affect worth the risk of short term fun?

Hi guys i have a corolla with the 4E-FE and i keep the almost every gear in the redline (in about 50% of my driving) i have 60000 km and my engine is fine althought i have modified it a little.I believe that Toyota engines limit is 1000 revs lower then their actual and its very safe driving "in the reds".Replying in "Corollagti16" i have to say that by taking a gear all the way to redline when shifting up you have your engine again near his top power (higher revs).Althought if you feel guilty by pushing your car you can change your oils more often , it's the best for your engine

The red line is for your benefit. It's like having a safe working pressure on a tyre or something, you exceed it and what happens next is anybody's guess.

At the end of the day, the higher you rev the engine the faster everything is spinning or going up and down therefore the rate of engine wear is higher. Decide for yourselves, it's common sense really.

red-lining it through the gears is fine...it's well within the limits. Besides the RPM governor would cut it and drop the revs back if you pushed her too hard...driving constanlty in the red is another matter...not god driving in third at 70mph for several miles or so.

Actually...especiually for diesels, it's better to get into top gear as quick as possible, to maintain good speed and god MPG. labouring in lower gears..just burns up fuel for longer... get through the gears quick and smoothly...and you have fun..and save fuel. however reving the <the spuds of lurrrrvve>s off her is a complelty different matter.

Like i said it feels like i have a turbo when it hits 1000rpm before redline its fantastic!

and it just seems rediculous when i can hit 60mph in 2nd and thats @ redline!
