New Gearbox Needed. Breaker Yard Recommendations?

Hi all, my first post here so please be kind :)

A couple of weeks ago my Avensis (GS 2002-reg 1.8 VVT-i engine 5-speed manual) suddenly screeched to halt while being driven on a country road at about 60. The gears wouldn't budge, not even to go into neutral, so couldn't be pushed or towed.

It was pain getting the recovery guy to bring the car back home and later have it taken to a garage. Now my garage tells me that it needs a new gearbox and clutch. The car is less than 5 years old and has done about 56,000 miles. The dealer who I bought this from says that only certain gearbox problems are covered under extended warranty, but that I'd have to bring the car in to be examined. I don't want to spend money unnecessarily on recovery just to take car to and from the garage/dealer, only to be told be given exhorbitant estimates for fixing the car. So...

Has anyone else had this problem? Any idea what it might cost to fix (both, dealer and garage are refusing to give any quotes)?

I've also been looking online for second-hand gearboxes. Can anyone recommend any breakeryards?

I've tried breakeryard.com, but can't get through to any of phone numbers they have sent me in the emailed quotes. :(

Thanks in advance!

Hi Mate

Bad luck about the gearbox. Mine is pretty noisy so I might be joining you soon. Coincidentally mine is also an 02 plate with 54k on the clock.

A second hand gearbox will set you back between £300 - £500. I'm not sure what the labour charges will be. best place to find one is either try Auto Trader or www.247spares.co.uk.

Good luck

Hi poppadum, I had same problem 12 months ago, got mine reconditioned at gearbox specialist in Cleckheaton for £500. Was told by them that any secondhand boxes tend to go quickly because theres so many taxi firms running the avensis. It also depends on how bad the damage is to your own box, whether they can use your own casing or not, to recon it. I was lucky, mine was ok. Hope this is helpful to you.
