Violent Vibration

The shuddering stops at about 60mph.

I've had all the wheels balanced recently.

Front and rear engine mounts plus lower front suspension arms replaced last year.

My garage can't find anything wrong, they've clecked rubber bushes, track-rod ends - although nothing is coming through the steering wheel, it is the car body that shudders - and all other suspension components.

They can find anything wrong with the drive shafts either.

Anybody got any ideas ?

TIA

Duncan

Did this shuddering begin after you had some work carried out on the car? Issues like these generally don't develop they are as a result of a change in the vehicle's characteristics.

I would begin by swapping the road wheels around. The front to rear etc. Also check the tyres very closely for any defects. I had a tyre recently which had a serious faulure in the bracing. It caused a similar problem around 60MPH but stopped as I increased speed. I couldn't see the problem until I had taken the wheel off the car. If you cant feel it through the steering I would suggest one of your rear tyres is faulty.

I can't remember this vibration occuring after any servicing etc. I had a second hand engine fitted last year and everything seem okay after that.

I forgot to mention, it's an automatic.

All four wheel were off a short time ago to check the balancing and nothing obvious was noticed with regards to the tyres.

How obvious is a problem with the tyres? What do I want to be looking for ?

When the car was in the garage yesterday they did swap tyres around.

One of those 'obvious when pointed out' bulges.

Hi, I'm only guessing but the fact it's had a 2nd hand engine might point me into thinking there could be some worn components in the flywheel or clutch area.Had a problem once where the bolts that go through the flywheel could not be tightened properly because the holes they went through had worn slightly oval maybe due to not being tightened properly in the past.Equallly could be a clutch problem. Was the clutch renewed before fitting the engine?Good luck Graham from Bournemouth.

It's an Automatic gearbox, but I'll ask if there was any problems when the engine was replaced.

I'd like to thank everybody who replied.

It turned out to be one of the drive shafts.

One of the CV joints virtually collapsed and made it un-drivable.
