Here’s a golden opportunity for the Government to raise even more money from beleaguered motorists. A leaked Treasury paper – which has been circulating in Westminster – has revealed that Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling is looking to introduce an extra ‘purchase tax’ on models with high CO2 emissions.

This would see as much as £2,000 added to a car’s price or increase its first year’s VED by up to £1,300. The new levies could be introduced as soon as Darling’s first Budget in the spring.

The scheme, aimed at discouraging buyers from choosing luxury, performance and off-road vehicles, will see a new top band introduced for models emitting more than 254g/km of CO2.

All cars in this category – including the entire Range Rover line-up, all Porsche 911s and most versions of the Mercedes S-Class – would be hit by the proposed £2,000 levy.

There is some good news for drivers of green vehicles, though. The paper suggests that buyers of models which emit less than 100g/km of CO2 will receive a rebate of up to £2,000. At present, only electric cars such as the G-Wiz and the Volkswagen Polo 1.4 TDI BlueMotion are under that figure.

All RAV4's will be okay old or new as they are all under 254g/km of CO2, my 2.0 petrol VVTi auto is one of the highest at 211g/km :(

I think it is for the true "Chelsea tractor" i.e. Range Rover V8 auto that take the kids to school. This is where all the bad press comes from for 4X4's in general as all of these inane tabloids group them all together as 4X4's.

I had a woman having a go at me not long ago and my "unnecessary" RAV has lower emmisions than her old Honda. They just stereotype along with the media - poor creatures.

I'm on my 4th tank of V-Power and it hasn't made any difference to me. If anything, I'm about 1 mpg down!!

Think I might go back to normal diesel, now V-Power has broke the £1 barrier - 100.9p/l here.

Last car was an RX-8 where I could expect to get 270 miles out of every tank !!!

Once had 327 miles on motorway before light came on so to see my trip say 43mpg av. on Rav is a dream to me lol

I've filled up our '02 plated 2.0 petrol twice now and the till reciept has been almost bang on the trip computer estimate of 27.5 mpg over a 50/50 mix of bypass and town driving. Just using Tesco 95 to get the points. Have tried different fuels in the past without noticing any real gains over several tankfulls.

That's about the same as I was getting in my 328i which was putting out 190+bhp Vs what? 140 or so in the Rav? To be fair I suppose the Rav will be affected by transmission losses more than the BM.

Aerodynamics, wieght, even the increased ground clearence all count against SUV's. But you pay's your money you take your choice

Went on a three day break from North Wales down to Stratford upon Avon and back up through Leicester .Filled the RAV with diesel before I went and resisted to re-fuel during the three days as I had put some injector cleaner in with the fuel.

One mile from home with 432 miles on the odometer the fuel warning light came on.Not bad mpg in my opinion.

Shell V power Diesel by us, is / was (last Thursday) £108.9 per litre and Shell Diesel Extra is / was £102.9 per litre.

116.9 per litre for BP Ultimate - £5.31 per gallon - £59.98 to fill up.

It has gone up a lump since last Thursday so don't be surprised when you go back and it's higher still.

What really pi**es me off is that The Government still want their full quota of duty even though their military antics have caused all this. Only in the UK (nearly) - We are the laughing stock of the world.

Yep that £1.08 was for ordinary BP Diesel...for the fact I needed to fill up as the next petrol station is near work.... :( :(

And work are still only paying us 12p per mile for business use (as set by government) and they say it's still going to go up up up up up in price................ :crybaby:
