Ae92 Gti Electrical Probs

RedNeck 92 Gti-16

Hi all!

This is my first posting! I race corolla's and to be honest. They are hard to beat!!

What's got me stumped is this prob with one of my gti 16's, it starts and runs fine, but has an intermitent problem. As the engine starts to warm or if the car is driven. Sometimes, i notice erratic readings from the rev counter. Very strange. whatever the engines revs are at the time, the needle will jump about all over, but only up to actual revs! Or, drops straight to the bottom of the guage untill acc pedal is pushed, at which point it may recover but might not. All the while the engine splutters and tries to die. Concurrent to this problem, the ECU check light flashes. When checked displays fault code 3 - Ignition amp signal(ECU, Wiring). I've been through everything. ECU, Coil, Distributer, Ignition amplifier. None of these are sick, so i reckon i must be looking in the wrong place. Maybe one of you guys has encountered this before? Anybody.. Anybody?

Gti 16 Are the best hot hatches, by far. I can give good tuning tips. Thanks

Hey m8

Sorry i carnt help u out wiv ur problem but if it were me id see how much it would be to have a specialist have a look, but im hoping u can help me?

Ive not long bought a ae92, im only just starting to learn about them but i just fell in love with mite straight away! its a white j-reg completely standard. Ive heard roomers that the later models (witch i think mine is?) is quicker and more reliable? do u know any thing about tha?

Im looking at goin nuts on the engine and ive got £2000 to spend ive had a look on a couple of websites and so far ive found HKS cams, adjutable cam gears, metal head gasket and valve spring set, TRD spark plugs, MAGNECOR ht leads, FENSPORT alloy pully at, MONGOOSE full exhaust system, superchip, FSE power boost valve, FIDANZA lightweight ally flywheel all for £1730

I went to a car show at santa pod not long ago and got 16.9sec 1/4 mile and i just couldnt get the power down proply it was jus spinnin cuz i hadnt had the car for long and some people are saying wiv an air filter and a chip it'll do 16sec 1/4 mile when mine already does!? :s unless its been tuned previously?

Cheers

Thanks for the interest mate!

You know a specialist is probably the route. I expect the local toyo workshop have encountered this one before.? The fault starts with an erratic rev counter reading, i thought maybe someone here might have some answers..

If you think you'd like to do more runs up the strip, why not try a supercharger conversion and an LSD diff!!

You cant beat good prep.

All the gen you need to know! Cheers buddy

Long shot/chance this but I know that MAP sensor or (or what has now become more common due to age) the wires going from it which have been fracturing/cracking have been causing the odd GTi owner on here simlar problems recently.

Help!!

Someone must have had this problem before, Re; full description(erratic tacho reading, then engine check light, etc)

I'm gonna have a look at the wiring(again!!). This time, i will check the MAP sensor wiring. I'm SHTUCK!!!!

I'll even try swapping a set of clocks in to see if that makes a difference....

I really am drawing a blank here..

OK!! It aint the map sensor... Its not the clocks. These have been changed and. NO CURE!!!!

AAAAAARRRRRGGHHH!!!!!!! I'm gonna lose faith an swap it for a CRX. I'm so low

Come on Toyo Boffs!! You must have encountered this one at some point.

Corolla Gti(TVIS). Fault code 3. Symptom; check light, erratic/random tacho reading

Fault code 3 is one of these

IGNITION SIGNAL--NO "IGF" SIGNAL TO ECU

--IGNITER/IGNITER CIRCUIT

--IGNITER AND IGNITION COIL/CIRCUIT

--ECU

You can find the info here

Found out something interesting. It cost £267 to put right. :ffs: :ffs:

After swapping every component in the ignition circuit,(Coil,Igniter,ECU,Distributer, etc). Having checked all connectors, wiring impedence. Other associated items, and all the earthing points.

Well i bit the bullet and dragged the old 'rolla over to Toyota, with the parting shot being, 'You built it, you fix it. I'm done with this hobby!'

She's a lovely flame red Gti-16, purr's like a wildcat on viagra. K&N, spot on!! So i had to do it.

This is what i found. The Chief monkey at the Toyota workshop, informed me that their ECU code reader/Scanner doesnt give any more information for diagnosis, other than the codes displayed by crossing the diagnostic wires and counting the flashes on the dashboard ecu light!

No big brains at 'yota then!! They just count the flashes! I suppose back in 1986 that was 'the *****'.

After all, it turned out to be a broken wire feed to the coil. Gutted! I wanted to be told something more significant; like intersteller micro-biomes had set up a colony in the T-vis assembly or so. A broken wire costs me £270!!

The moral being,'when it comes to electrics, you must be exact in your work method. Then you will not waste time'.

My *****!! I'm gettin twin 45's. Cheers all!!!
