White Coating On 02 Sensor (leanburn)

Hi,

I just replaced O2 sensor om my Carina E -97 (7AFE). I noticed that there was a white coating on the sensor, which I have read means that there is probably coolant in the exhaust. After driving 10-20 miles, I removed the new sensor and now it too had a similar white coating. My Toyota repair shop have looked at the car and claims that the head gasket is fine, and also that white coating on a O2 sensor is normal for leanburn engines due to the leaner mixture. I would like a second opinion on this :)

Buy a compression tester and to a test by your self. Then you will get the answer if there is any faults with the compression. If your headgasket has gone you should see that with a compression test. Also look in the radiator when you have the engine on, remember to do this when it is cold. If there are lot of bubbles in the water there is something wrong with the headgasket.

OK, I just tested that. After a little while the water began to rise and kept pouring over the top of the cap, but I did not see any bubbles. So I guess thats good news :)

Here is a picture of the sensor I just took:

This is the top of the sensor (the side that is facing the exhaust). The sensor has no white coating on the other side.

That sounds good for you. Are you still having problems with the o2 sensor as you had after the change of the radiator?

I got an old one from the scrap yard and no more code 21 (last scrapyard sensor in sweden ;)). I just want to make sure that there is no coolant leakage and that the same thing will happen to the new sensor. Since the coating on the new sensor is now similar to the old one, I began suspecting the head gasket. But I guess that the coating might be normal and that the old O2 sensor failed for other reasons. Only time will tell..
