To ginter1234, What year is your model, because reading through some of the postings i'm becoming confused. I cannot understand why an engine with hydraulic tappets would give valve clearances. Anyway come back with year & i'll have a look through my info.

To ginter1234, Just checked my info sheets & showing at 60,000mile service (cambelt change service also) valve clearances should be checked at added time & cost to service. Valve clearance from cold for Inlet is 0.20 to 0.30mm & exhaust valve clearance from cold is 0.35 to 0.45mm. Have just checked tool box in case i am imagining things & i have 2 tools to help with shim adjustment. Snap-on part nu YA8825 & other tool nu a bit rubbed out but think it is YA8825-1, so you could look at snap-on tool site aswell to confirm. So unless Toyota have made alteration from certain chassis nu onwards, something appears strange hear. You should have cambelt running to your exhaust camshaft pulley wheel & with rocker cover removed you would see gear at other end of exhaust camshaft running drive gear on end of inlet camshaft. Both sets of camshaft lobes pushing against cam buckets & shims. On know account what so ever try to fit your own made up shims, they are the size of a 2 pence piece but are very high precision made components working for years under extreme conditions. I live in the countryside & just about every farmer around here is running some form of Landcruiser, not brand new but well used in most cases because they are so reliable. So it is possible later models have hydraulic tappets?? I think a call to your local dealer should clear matter up. Hope this has not confused matters further.

Thanks for the info Beagh, I will look into this further when I change the cambelt next year. Will wait until the weather warms up a little first though!

hi all

a query from my side

my landcruiser is a lc5 d4d 2004

i started noticing a humming or grinding noise at high speeds like 70mph on the motorway,it appears even when my foot is not on the gas pedal.it is intermittent comes and goes at reg intervals, you can even feel that vibration on the floor, took it to local toyota garage, mechanic did a run agreed there is this noise and checked out the entire drivetrain but no cause found, told me it will go away on its own, this noise is driving me nuts.now i have noted the hum even in low speeds when coasting down a hill with gear lever in neutral.can anybody help please

HI ALL

I HAVE A 2003 LC3 D4D 3 LITRE. IT IS EXTREMELY NOISY WHEN IT IS COLD, IT SOUNDS AS THOUGH A LIFTER IS STUCK BUT THE NOISE IS ONLY REALLY BAD AT AROUND 2000 REVS. WHEN THE ENGINE WARMS UP THE NOISE IS HARDLY NOTICEABLE. DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THE SAME THING OR KNOW WHAT CAUSES THIS, ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

Cheers

There do seem to be stories around the place of 2007 landcruisers being very noisy when cold - it seems to be since the engine was upgraded to the 173 version.

From whatcar.com: "It has an enormously loud rattling noise from the engine when cold (sounding like someone rattling a spoon inside a tin can and causing passengers to utter alarmed and unrepeatable expletives). The car was off the road for one month waiting for new injectors. "

and

"New injectors were fitted after the car was in the garage for 1 month. Three weeks later it was worse than before. The car was booked in for two weeks later, but the morning the car was due in, the service manager told me the mechanic who needed to do it was on holiday for two weeks. "

ihi paul i think it is a build up of carbon in your injectors. this may lead to engine damage if left unchecked as it will carbonise your oil.this may lead to engine failure.

Its only the injectors warming up. its nothing to worry about. try putting your foot down around 2000rpm from cold the knocking will go away. & when you back off it will come back. I have been told that having them chiped makes it qiuter from cold.

Thats interesting as I have the chipped Invincible model and mine is never noisey from cold :)

Mind you my car has done less than 5000 miles so I was wondering if the noise tends to start after a certain mileage :unsure:

No, they still are "solid" buckets (no shims) as the buckets come in various thicknesses to give the correct valve clearances so oil pressure or quality have no direct bearing on noise from them (unless they are running dry in which case get ready for a BIG bill).

I have changed loads of injectors and have yet to have one come back with the same or worse noises yet. Just make sure when they are changed the dealer does re-code them as it is most important. This involves calibrating them using the handheld computer (IT2) and entering the 30 digit calibration code stamped on the top of the new injectors into the ECU. After all four have been calibrated the batteries need to be disconnected for a few mins so the ECU "learns" the new values. Basically this ensures the new injectors are delivering the optimum amount of fuel (fuel trimming) so they dont over/under fuel which causes the knocking in the first place.

I have a 54plate lc5 d4d with the same noise. toyota had it back and fitted new injectors. (I get rattly injector noise when cold) but this noise is different!

Took it to diesel specialist recently who thought it was probably something to do with the egr valve.

I dont know if any of the following symptoms match yours...

-Poor fuel economy

-Ticking EGR with ignition on but engine stopped

-No smoke from tailpipe even under heavy load

-Occasional stalling about 30 seconds after cold start but only while driving. (Then wont restart for 30 seconds)

-Noise is present at 2k revs when cold but drops down to 1500 revs when fully warm.

I am thinking of blanking off egr but also removing cat from exhaust to see what that does.

Does anyone know of an EGR blanking plate for 3.0 d4d engine??

Thanks

adam

Is there a Toyot-approved chip? I always thought that chipping invalidated the warranty.

had mine a week and have noticed the same thing noisy when cold and at low revs ,seems to get quieter when at higher revs .was told this is part of the characteristics of the car .mine has done 90,000 with full history . always thought tappets got noisier the higher you rev the engine .

I've recently 'retired'a 2001 Colorado from 12 years of motorway use. D4D engine makes all the noises described thus far and doesn't miss a beat. I contacted the former owner who said it had been like it from new. With nigh on 220,000 miles under its treads and with a full Toyota history, I'm looking forward to a clattery but hopefully reliable time with 'Clyde!'

These engines do `rattle` a bit especially when cold but if its excessive your injectors may need attention.

Run a good fuel system cleaner through it and or a couple of tanks of Shell V-Power diesel.

Change your fuel filter and adding some two stroke oil to the diesel helps to quieten things.
