Carputer In My Hilux

I just ordered all the bits to have a double din size vga touch screen linked to a 12v pc thats in a alloy case like the size of a amp, im fitting it behind the rear seats in the back as they pull down and my music amp is already in there. its also coming with a dvd slot drive which is a stand alone item (very thin) which im mounting in the top of the glove box. its coming with a water proff gps recever so can run auto route for sat nav, 120gig hard drive for music, then i may get some web cams, internet using my 3g phone, wifi, blah blah

its got a clever 12v psu that turns on by itself when you turn the key one notch like you do for your radio, plus it shuts down on its own after you turn car off. Im going to link it all up to my amp and Speakers so should be pretty cool, only thing im wondering about is the radio, think i can get a usb thing that picks up fm radio? but would like to use a normal bee sting car ariel if i can link it up some how.

thats the carputer http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...N:IT&ih=010

im either going to run vista or xp, the guy im getting it from says it will run vista. im hoping i can have it like my home pc where when i shut i down it keeps the ram running in a low power mode with everything else off so when you turn it on its there ready in 1 second. or thats what my home pc is like that i just built

Looks a bargain - so it looks like you'll be running windows??

So do you have to wait for it to boot up??

Just read your second reply - fair enough if it can boot up that quick

hehe doub't count on it running VISTA in a hurry the spec is a little low for vista, vista is mental for resources u only have 1024mb of ram, vista likes 800mb of that for its self, VIA c7 chip probably tell u it doesn't know what that is microsoft like there intel chips A LOT! recommend is about 2.6ghz p4 with hyper threading.

64mb of on board graphics ram, it will most likely say hell no, considering u need DX10 to get much out of vista or DX9 and most chips of that breed have 128mb on ram miniumum DDR2 PC4200 ram is pretty much obsolete now away it was to slow and was found to have high latency PC4300 replaced it with 1 week of release to conter the problems.

even windows XP may have problems on a spec like this, i build high end gaming PC's for my mates in the £4000 to £5000 end, admitadly £1000 on that is graphics cards.

sorry to burst a bubble but i do hate to see people waste there money thinking it will do something that it won't

make sure the mini ITX PC gets enough ventilation and you will need a bit more ram if using vista

im thinking of putting a air vent in the back some where near it to help with cool air. as for vista im not bothered weather it has it or not, im guessing its best with a chopped up xp lite. most the guys on http://www.digital-car.co.uk/forum/ use roadrunner for the frontend as its simple and does the stuff you need in a car, you dont need big power to play mp3's and defo cant go using p4s as you can only really get 160w 12v power surplies unless you want to spend over £200 on the psu, and even then you wont get anywhere near the power of my 230v Hiper 580W psu i use at home which is whats needed these days for big cpu's

  • 4 months later...

well just thought i would update on the carputer...

its really good

I've got a really good bit of software for it, called a "front end" in the car computer world, its a fully user freindly touch screen master peace.

So far i have music (around 30 gig so far) few videos, radio with rds and presets, full sat nav with world mapping, plus the world wide web :) . because its all linked with this easy simple to use software even my mum can use it ;)

tock a couple of pics of it in the hilux today, plus coulpe of screen shots as they show it better than my n95 mobile camera does, oh its even linked to that to.

ah i love it when a plan comes together

thats how, I do the pay as you go option for £10 per month. Not bad really i thought for 1 gig per month, as its not as if im going to be going over that in a car :) im looking forward to the next traffic jam i get it ;)

the other cool thing with it all is because its got wi-fi, i can turn it on while its on my drive with out the screen on and transfer music, vidoes etc over to it from the comfort of my lounge. the prossesor in it is a: 2.0GHz 20 Watt VIA C7 CPU.

i've fitted a 6 port usb hub in the glove box, plus 1 in the back so i can run pretty much anything with a usb port, i might fit a web cam some where next

Very cool, what 'front end' software did you use? was it free?

Also, when browsing the net, how do you type? does a keyboard appear on the touch-screen or do you have to hide a keyboard in your car?
