The 7A (1.8lt) and 3S (2.0lt) both have timing belts. Why you ask?

Timing belts should be changed every 60K miles(or every 5 years). Genuine belts have a sticker which is normally attached to the timing cover stating the date/mileage they were changed.

AFAIK both engines are 'non-interference' so a broken belt would not damage the engine anyway. That said, I would get them changed unless you can be certain when they were last done. Dealer £250+. Specialist £150.

I would choose these engines over the VVTI due to the excessive oil consumption of the latter.

I was recommended of the timing belt change a couple of years back (@58K miles) I did not do it till 2 weeks back but finally decided to change it at 74K miles. (you can be sure that the belt will go on for that long ;)) Toyota dealer price was £250, but other specialist did it for £125 (£175 if you want a new tensioner as well) This was in Slough

What about D4D 2001 years. Can it damage the egnine?

The 2001 CDX petrol engines have chains.

If the engine cover's got VVTi on it then it's chain, if it hasn't it's the earlier belt driven - it was a gem, the best 4-cylinder engine Toyota ever made.

No. Not unless it stretches and starts getting rattly but the idea is the chain should last the life of the car.
