No Compression On Cylinder 4

I have a basic model Yaris (1999 T reg) that has done 38,000 miles and have had absolutely no problems with it. However, on Friday last the amber engine warning light came on. I took the car into my local Toyota garage who informed me that one of the valves had broken and therefore there was no compression on cylinder 4.

They have told me that it will cost circa £840 to sort out.

Can anyone tell me:

a) If they have had the same experience

B) If so, how much it cost them to sort it out

c) Any thoughts on whether it will be worth writing to Toyota to register a complaint regarding the above.

Would be grateful for any replies.

yes make a complaint. the more problems people tell toyota about the easier it will be to get these problems under warranty, but if no one complains about problems then they wont be documented. e.g. i read someone on the site has gone through 3 gearboxes, i destroyed a gearbox on my 1.0L but toyota said they were not going to fix it because they had never heard of this happening before.

they will try to get out of anything toyota they are skimping on parts for their newer models and its going against the reputation they worked hard to get. a few pounds saved on cheaper pistons or velves saves millions over all: result weaker engines.
