I Recently had the gearbox oil in my 1.0GS Yaris changed for Castrol Syntrax. What a bad mistake, although the oil was exactly the same spec as recomended in the manual the cold gearchange became much worse.

I then changed the oil for toyota's own gearbox oil - no change.

Booked car in to dealer they fitted a modified gear linkage (under warranty) this made a big difference but cold changes were still crunchy- Dealer changed the gearbox oil for ATF.

I now have a nice smooth gear change.

I guess Toyota have used ATF as a factory fill for the gearbox, at least changing the oil in the first place made the box so bad that they had to fit the modified linkage.

The ATF they used was Shell Donax TA available from www.btls.co.uk/FLubricants.htm

in a 4 litre tub @ £15 inc P&P
