Picnic Speedo & Rev Counter Issues

I have a 98 2.0 petrol picnic which I am pulling my hair out with :)

About 3 months ago I started to have intermittent issues with the speedo and rev counter dropping to zero.

Switching the ignition on and off normally rectifies the issue and then it can be fine for days, or go again after a few minutes.

At the time I had a duff HT lead, which was breaking down, so I put it down to an issue with the electrical interference from that.

Replacing the leads had made no difference.

Now, the issue I have is that the speedo and rev counter are completely off, though if I disconnect the Battery for a period of time,

they come back to life for a while, then go back to nothing.

Once in a while they have stuck at the "ten to two" position and every now and then, they "twitch" as if they are getting a too much of a signal.

I checked the earth and cleaned all that I can find, so any additional help would be well received.

Thanks

I get this as well! (N-reg picnic).

Clicking on the speedo 'reset' button helps - the button that switches mileometer readings (Total, Journey A, Journey B)

My 1997 Picnic 2.0 GTX has just started showing the same systems. It is an automatic and the overdrive also kept flicking in and out. After the engine had been off for 20 mins it reset itself. However after 30 miles I lost the speedo and tachometer which again came back after the engine had been off for an hour.
