Just picked up my first ever MR2. Its a 1994 L Reg Rev2 Turbo (might have been a NA when it came over and then converted to a Rev2 Turbo or it might be a very late edition Rev2 if thats possible) You might have saw it on Pistonheads. Heres some pics -

Current mods are -

Bonnet painted black with red, green, gold and blue fleck in it (looks very nice)

18" Equip Alloy Wheels

Blue Flame Turbo Exhaust

3" Down Pipe

Border Body Kit including spoiler

Rare Side skirts

LED side lights

KING Personal steering Wheel

Bride Bucket seat with harness seat belt fittings

Tinted windows

Crunch Amplifier 1000W

JL Audio Bass Box 1000W

Up rated front Pioneer Speakers

Twin Plate Performance clutch

CUSCO Adjustable shock coil overs

CUSCO rear strut brace

XPower Large SMIC Intercooler

HKS Air Filter

EBC Brakes (Red front, Green rear)

Turbo XS Type – H Blow off valve

Greddy Turbo Guage

Exhaust Temp Guage

Water Temp Guage

Oil Temp Guage

Turbo Timer

Apexi Super Air flow converter

Fuel monitor to show how rich/lean the car is running

HKS Electronic Valve Controller (Boost gauge)

Cobra CAT1 Alarm and Immobiliser

Has 68,000 kilometres (approx 42000 miles) on the clock.

Noticed a few problems on the way home -

1. a picture of an engine lit up on the bottom left of the dash and then went off again after some time. While it was on there was no performance loss or anything noticable. What could this be?

2. When turning the lights on or flashing the lights it adds 1 or 2 km to the clock and the MPH needle jumps a bit. but it only does this once untill the car is turned off and turned back on again when it will do it again.

3. The water temp guage on the dash seemed to go right to the top then drop and go to the top and drop again, is this normal?? Theres an external temp guage anyway.

It feels like a Go-Kart when in it (guessing because of the coil over suspension) and the sound the turbo makes is amazing

What does the first click of the light stalk do? I turned it to the first click and no lights came on, turned it to the second click and the side lights came on (while adding 1km to my clock  ) turned it to 3rd click and the main lights came on, what does the first click do??

Now I just need another Bride seat for the passenger side and a owners manual

Overall Im very happy with it and it looks Very nice, Persoanlly I have never saw one like this around my area :)

Hard part now is waiting till Feb 26th before I can drive it (do to insurance, no point in canceling it and loosing my no claim when the insurance is up soon anyway)!!

That's a very nice MR2!! Liking the Gagues on the passenger side.

Your just have to keep polishing it till Feb then when you come to drive it, it will be very clean!!

Thanks. Yea will be polishing it once it stops raining then putting a cover over it hehe :D

The Twin Plate clutch is not as bad as I thought it would be. Just you have to be ready for it as it bites almost as soon as you start letting go of the clutch. Its not been fitted for long either apparently.

Looked through the receipts and its had £2000 or more spent on it at rogue in the last few months, new set of tyres, New Cobra Alarm installed about 9 months ago at £350 + Fitting and reciepts for loads more.

That one fine looking car you have mate

The question about the side light they dont light up well on my car they dont as well. I have seen on other forums peeps have put a small bulb in there to and have wired it up so that it comes on with the side lights.

Nice looking 2 ya got there but,

it looks like it could of been a rev3 n/a before it came turbo, there is quite a few things i noticed just lookin at the pics, but as long as ur happy that's all that counts..

1) that's engine management light i deffo would check for error codes and see what is stored in there.

2) Sounds like some very suspicious wiring there my friend.

3) That is not normal, they shouldn't ever go above half way under normal driving, i'd get that looked at.

the first position of the light stalk hmm well only difference i know of is usefull for changing bulbs on first position when you use the headlight flash the lights do not retract, where as on position 0 they do retract.

Check to make sure xs bov is ok cos a lot of rev2's do not like bov's cos of the afm, the HKS evc is actually a boost controller not a boost guage, and SAFC's aint the best way of controlling fuel on a tubby, not always a good thing.

I'm not saying all this to annoy you just want to make sure ur tubby stays alive n you get every little problem sorted.

Have fun n watch the rear end on wet days.

Thanks :D... The amount off looks you get is amazing LOL.. Went home via town and loads of people just stop and stare.

I love the way you can hear the turbo kick in.

Now I just have to look into them little problems (nothing major I shouldnt think, the car drove 110 miles no problem)

Also Fuel usage is good. Had 1/4 tank of Shell V-Power when picked it up so put another £30 of V-Power in which took it to 3/4 tank. got home after 110 miles and it was on 1/2 tank :D. Saying that it wasnt getting driven hard.

Yea, thats what I stared thinking. Would have been good if they dropped a rev3 Turbo engine in :D. I supose a good thing with this is most likely before putting the engine in it would have had all the belts etc changed that usually go while it was out.

1) that's engine management light i deffo would check for error codes and see what is stored in there.

Did the fault code check and got -

34 - Excessive Turbo Charging Pressure

42 - No Speed signal for 8 seconds when engine speed is between 2,500rpm and 5,000 rpm and coolant temp is below 80 Deg C except when racing the engine

Could error 34 be an old error code that hasnt been cleared from the memory as Rogue Motor Sport changed the turbo and set the Electronic HKS Boost controller to a safe boost level etc 3 months ago for the previous owner who has left it how they set it??

Didnt notice any boost problems on the way home but they did say something about recently fitting new intercooler rubber hoses (the blue ones) as they were too big and leaking so maybe its an old code?

I think I noticed error 42 on the way home (guessing this was what the engine light came on for) as the MPH guage seemed to jump from 55mph to 65mph then down to 60mph..

2) Sounds like some very suspicious wiring there my friend.

Where abouts should I be checking for this wiring? wonder if its link to code 42.

3) That is not normal, they shouldn't ever go above half way under normal driving, i'd get that looked at.

I looked at the external water temp guage and it was reading 90 - 95 deg C, is this normal for a motorway run?

Check to make sure xs bov is ok cos a lot of rev2's do not like bov's cos of the afm,

What should I be checking / looking out for?

the HKS evc is actually a boost controller not a boost guage,

yea I know, I just copy and pasted the sellers description and forgot to edit that bit out :)

and SAFC's aint the best way of controlling fuel on a tubby, not always a good thing.

Personally I dont realy want to touch anything on it incase I do something wrong, think its set to standard anway so will just leave it how it is :D

Thanks

Error 34, i would clear all codes n start again see what gets stored if any, just seems like it's over boosted at some point but i would of thought rogue would of reset error codes when fitting boost controller or at least checked and informed you.

what boost is it running iirc 15psi is max on a rev2 without fcd, the ct26 tends to run out of puff at 5500rpm.

Error 42, might be a long shot but do you know if it has been de limited and if so what delimiter is on it, cos i do know you can get speed sensor errors with some of the 4 wire delimiters. i would deffo look into that, i've heard stories of speedo's acting very strange with those delimiters.

I would guess at 80-85 degrees for normal use

it has been said that vent to atmos bov's tend to unsettle the rev2 a little with irratic idle n sometimes a bit of rich running but only at gear changes, if it's all running ok then no need to worry.

I will try and find out the boost pressure. Have no idea how to work / understand the HKS Boost controller yet so reading the instructions now. Then again we didnt realy use much boost on the way home, probably hit 3500 - 4000 revs max (when the turbos just realy starting to kick in).

The car has been delimited and converted to MPH, where about is the delimiter usually placed so I can find out? If it is a 4 wire one, what should I change it for?

Will check the coolant level, might need topped up or something. Maybe the standard temp guage was going funny as its had the external guage fitted?

Didnt realy hear the bov doing anything much but then again didnt realy hit high revs unless something is wrong with the bov?? could it be seized up? Are bov easy to strip down and clean up?

Thanks

Delimiter will be wired in behind the clocks, u'll see straight away which one it is,

one is a little black box with 4 wires, 3 of them are screwed to the clcok backs and the other is spliced into speed sensor wire (purple with silver tracer iirc). the other delimiter type is a pcb screwed to the circuit board on back of clocks. you can get the pcb(clamping) type ones from a few places or you could use an a'pexi rsm to remove speed cut.

never heard of a bov siezing up but in extreme cases can leak but you'd know if it wasn't holding pressure. umm some bov's are very easy to strip n recon.

Thanks will have a look on the weekend.

noticed on another forum that theres a pipe that you can disconnect to make the dump valve "vent to atmosphere" or did I just read this wrong??

Thanks

Looks good mate and congrats on the purchase... I see you went for it in the end ehh. lol

I really hope the issues which have been raised by Doreen are easy fixes but the problem with highly modded cars like this is that you dont know where to start looking if you are not the one who put the mods on it in the first place.

When modded a car... if you come across and issue you can just remove the last thing that was added to return it back to normal running order. Sadly when you by a modded one.. this aint always easy to do for obvious reasons.

Fingers crossed though mate.. really hope its alright. :)

p.s) If it was my car.. i would get a lower lever spoiler and some more understated rims. ;)

Nice car mate. I was actually looking at i on pistonheads myself!

AS for the bov side of things. Because your car has a AFM and not a MAP/MAF sensor, sometimes with vent to atmos bovs you can get stalling issues. The HKS SSQV is the best for sorting this out.

If your car is fine though, I would just leave it as is (the bov that is).

SAFC is fine also for sorting out the fuelling. It's not as good as a standalone ECU/piggy back ECU... but again, if it's doing the job fine, I'd just leave it for the time being unless you go more along the tuning side of things.

As someone else said.. be carefull in wet conditions. When these things go, they go. You would have to have lightning reactions to be able to catch it. These cars suffer from extreme snap oversteer!

hehe yea. I wanted a Rev3 but just fell in love with this one lol. Been told you can get a Rev2 to Rev3 conversion done quite easy so will probably get this done sometime in the future.

Will look into the problems on the weekend. Cant wait untill its light nights again.

Thanks

Nice car mate. I was actually looking at i on pistonheads myself!

Thanks. Was watching it on eBay before it was on Piston heads but that was quite a while ago (2 or 3 months before christmas I think) when I wasnt looking to buy one at that time but then I saw it again on Piston heads a few weeks ago and managed to get it for £4,500 which I think was definatly worth it even with them small problems considering the amount spent on it and the condition. Had a quick look underneith it and it looks new (apparently the Mechanic at Rogue said it looks like its never been on the road before). In the past 4 months its had £2000+ spent on it at Rogue alone!!

If I get problems with this Dump Valve I will switch to a HKS SSQV. Didnt realy use much boost on the way back so dont realy know what the current one is like (think we only hit about 0.4 bar or something maybe not even that)

Dont worry, Will be very carful in the wet and on corners :)

If I cant sort the problems out myself I will probably take it to GTSChris or another MR2 Specialist.

What do you think it would be like with 2x Engine Air Scoops?? Might buy some for it.

Thanks

As just mentioned,

get urself over to TBDev, Tim is a top bloke, and the forum is a nice place with good friendly banter that isn't as restrictive as most of the other forums.

I would say yes to two bomex scoops, not Toms ones.

ahh Im the other way around, Im more of a Toms scoop fan over the Bomex ones (the Bomex ones are the thin ones areant they?) I supose If I dont like the Toms ones I can easilly sell them and get my money back.

Thanks
