As I have said, am just getting my head around the workings of modern diesels, been mainly used to working on petrol. Very helpfull thank you.

I spent most of my life in the motor industry. It became too much fire fighting in the latter years of brake testing and development - shcm will tell you it is a game of tactics and politics which became a bind for me.

I retired to the railway and the hardest part is getting up in the morning! I sometimes flick the computer on while I'm trying to come to!!! Not sure when I will retire but after that you will only see replies after about 09.30!!

It's all depressingly familiar. The engineering - when you are "allowed" to do it properly - just about sustains you. I can see the attraction in driving trains.

Just don't get me started otherwise I'll be a candidate to do a star-turn at one of your "Grumpy Old Men" sessions. :ffs: :thumbsup:

I suppose I may class myself lucky then that I am self employed, nobody to answer to, but negatively, the buck stops at me :wacko: .

It's a never ending learning curve with vehicles, which can be both rewarding and frustrating at the same time.

D4D doesn't have a wastegate but it does have pressure limiting valve/switches. I would try to get any fault codes from the ECU first.

Hi Anchorman.

I've not been around for quite a while due to a family bereavement etc so lost touch until my Rav has shown a 1251 error. When investigating I'm being told its the waste gate. Talked to a turbo specialist and asked him he never corrected me as such but said there was a luvre type assembly that sticks. just having a browse and reconnecting with the forum and spotted this. Now I'm confused can you help clarify please. The error is only comming up when towing the caravan at the moment but it has happened previously when not towing but not for sveral thousand miles. It's now on 95000 so I suspect the turbo needs a good clean and service.

It's a while since anyone has posted on this forum, I'm new here and hope there's someone who can help (are you still there Anchorman??)! Have read the topic with much interest - thanks everyone for your contributions. I have a Previa 2002 D4D, with similar acceleration / loss of power problems to others posting on the forum - no need for details. Today I went to a local garage to have error codes read - 3 came up;

P0100 - Mass air flow sensor circuit malfunction (not sure this is relevant though as I did disconnect the MAF the other night to apply 10k Boost spray, so this error might be from this)

P1115 - Something to do with coolant temperature

P1228 - fuel pressure problem

Whilst looking at the engine the mechanic noticed that a particular part seemed to have had something broken off (we couldn't work out what part it was). After a call to Toyota with the part no. (25819-27030) it is seemingly a vacuum regulating valve (I assume the same as a VSV?). It looks like there is glue around the broken plastic, as if someone in the past has broken the part and then glued it back together. Attached is a photo (VSV.jpg) of the offending part with the 'broken' bit with old glue (white residue) circled in red. I have tracked down some photos of Previa engines from autotrader (also attached as d4d engine.jpg), and the part os clearly visible with a grey part on top of it - the bit missing from my part I assume? What does this broken off bit do?

Could this be what is causing my problems? Or is this part nothing to do with acceleration / power? I have to be honest, I've never noticed that there was anything ever attached to the part before noticing now that it is broken off, but I haven't been looking. Toyota are quoting £215 + VAT for a replacment part, so of course I want to be fairly sure that it is this part before I go forking out that sort of money. For the record, I have changed the fuel filter already this week, and put Forte through the fuel system. I suppose the problem could be MAF sensor, or SCV's, but as these are also fairly expensive parts I am retiscent to change them when the VSV seems broken and is immediately the most suspicious part. What do you think? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Yes I'm still here but thanks to Tiscali I have had no internet today.

Bear with me and tomorrow I will look up those codes then we'll try to work out what is happening. If that VRV(VSV) is broken it will cause you problems but you might be able to improve things temporarily by just linking the pipes together with a bit of tubing.

OK. The VRV is actually the part that controls the Turbo output. Using signals from the turbo pressure sensor, the engine ECU then signals the VRV. This varies the amount of vacuum that is applied to the turbo vac unit (that cylinder you can see attached to the top of the turbo). This in turn has a link to the variable nozzle and that varies the amount of charge the turbo produces.

With that in mind you have to do something about the broken VRV. You could try bypassing it with a bit of tube by just linking the 2 rubber pipes;

Inevitably it needs changing so you need to put your tongue in Kingo's ear for a good price or get one from a scrapyard.

Now to those fault codes. The first two are almost certainly a result of disconnecting the MAF so just clear the codes and see if they go. The same may apply to the third (P1228) but it can also be associated with the SCV's which are another potential contributor to the low power. If this stays present after clearing the codes you are going to have to look at them but see what happens first.

Thanks so much for your help and time Anchorman, really appreciate it.

I ended up changing the VRV as it was broken anyway, but this made no difference to acceleration. Tried every single scrapyard I could find in yellow pages but alas nobody had a Previa in, so had to buy from main dealer (managed to get a bit of a discount though!).

I checked the MAF sensor, and it was filthy. I tried to clean it (which I know doesn't work, so don't know why I tried it anyway!) and after that the Management light was constantly on (oops). So I changed that as well, which made the management light go out again but made no difference to acceleration.

Getting pretty peeved off now, and don't want to waste more money changing possible broken parts. Fault code P1228 points to fuel pressure problems, but this could be down to SCV's, fuel pump, knackered or dirty injectors, blockage in fuel pipework, or even a dodgy wire somewhere. So I have bit the bullet and booked it into a Toyota approved garage to diagnose, and hopefully fix. Am taking it in tomorrow morning and will update the forum with the outcome.

The SCVs are the unreliable parts. For goodness sake don't let them start ripping injectors out unless they are sure!!!

You can buy SCVs off Kingo and do the job yourself. It costs about £200 for parts and the instructions are pinned at the top.

Thanks for all your help Anchorman, really do appreciate it. Sorry for delay in update - it's been a crazy week! Took my car to the Toyota garage on Friday last week and they diagnosed the proplem as the SCV's. I thought I'd wait until I had the car back and it was actually fixed until I posted here with the outcome, and I knew which parts they had used from the invoice. They did indeed replace the SCV's and I'm glad to report that it seems to have done the trick! Hurrah!

This forum has been a massive help over the past few weeks - thanks to all contributors for sharing their experiences and knowledge. I'm glad to have my Previa back, I have to be honest and say that so far (even with the problems I've had) it's the best car I've ever had.

Hi guys I’ve just joined the site as I’m getting similar problem with my 04 rav4 2.0 diesel, when I get to about 2k rev's it feels like the car is cutting the accelerator every couple of seconds. I have took it to Toyota to get checked and said it showed DTC49 and DTC35, and they said it needs new spill control valves and a new turbo, when I went to the garage they said the turbo was just a advisory as it is noisy and maybe on its way out

Any advice will be much appreciated

Welcome to the club.

Any chance you can record that turbo sound. Does it sound noisy to you?

I think the turbo fault could show up as a secondary effect of the SCVs. You could try some WD40 in the VSV as a starter but I think you will end up doing the SCVs to cure it.

Thanks for your reply. I'll try to record the sound of the engine/turbo and attach it in a post for you. I've not noticed myself that it sounded overly noisey! Think i'll need to get the scv's done but not through the Toyota garage as they've quoted £448.90! Going to ring a few local garages and get quotes from them. So hopefully that will cure the problem.
