Gen 4 Air Con

Does anyone have any idea what gas is used in the air con system in an 86 celica? Ive been told that it will be either R12 or R134, and that if it is R12 then the system will need upgrading to use R134 as R12 can not be supplied anymore. I need to know before I take it in because if it needs the upgrade I will have to find an air conditioning specialist to take it to, but ive been unable to find any info anywhere online.

judging by the vintage of the car I'd say it was a R12 system.

My Sera is a 1990 and that was R12. It's not a bad job to get them converted though.

It will be R12. This is no longer available. However, all good air con places will have a R12 reeplacement, R143 ( NOT R134) or R60. It will be the same price. They simply suck all your old gas on by attatching a vacuum pump tp one of your valves and then they will gas you up with the new stuff. As simple as that my friend. So any places that try and sting you for a few hundred to "convert" to R134, tell them to get notted@

R143 uses different valves , so these will have to be changed in order to sort the system out.

someone mentioned getting this done a few years ago on a Starlet GTT for about fifty quid.

Like Carinall says, get prices from as many places as you can - then tell the expensive ones to sod off !
