Carina E Idling Problem

Last month a friend of mine bought a 1993 Carina E 2.0 GLi(3S-FE engine). ran fine until today when it just stopped idling-- ok when moving but when stopped & in neutral engine dies.

was previously showing problem with exhaust gasket between manifold & downpipe which we have tried & so far failed to fix. ref to procedure in haynes manual shows no fault codes from ECU.

am worried about cambelt as service record shows no recent change-- could it have slipped a tooth? any suggestions welcome.
