Yaris 08 Reversing Lights

Mrs Fergus's Yaris is now off the road with an inoperative clutch (so it didn't "bed down" then). She asked the dealer to fix the reversing lights, which have never worked. We did report this on day 1 but with all the other nonsense with the car we decided to wait until it had to visit the dealer before asking for them to be fixed. Anyway, the voicemail on my phone (!) says that the lights are not inoperative as the Yaris doesn't have reversing lights!

Anyway, my question as I don't have a Yaris to hand, does this thing have one reversing light or two?

Dear Dog,

The Yaris should have ONE reversing light and ONE rear fog light.

If you give it some respect it might just start to grow on you ;)

Second that  it will be a great little car, once you get it sorted.

I would be tempted to change dealerships, though I know this is hard if you don't have another locally. The dealer in the town I used to live in appeared to know less about the car I had than I did, and we ended up having countless disagreements. I started to drive to the dealership in the next town (about 30 minutes away) and they couldn't have been more different - courteous, non-patronising, helpful - they ended up with all my business until I moved towns, even now I still deal with them! The first one, incidently, went out of business!

Regards

Haha thats brilliant. Whoever left the message should be sacked. I'm sure my P2 t-sport has 2 reversing lights but the P1 only has one. So the mk2 only has 1? No wonder the dealers get confused. If it only has 1, then it will always be on the nearside (for RHD cars).

Actually it won't, the "We reject the car, give us our money back" letter went by recorded today and my wife has seen sense and has ordered a Jazz.

Hi

It's a Oct 07.

Other people are reporting the same problem on 1.3 models made in the last few months.

Only does it when left for 2 days or more and it's cold. Maybe I need to drive it every day.

Postman Pat, do you have a black & white cat?

Hi my wife purchased a 2007 Yaris 1.3 SR middle of last year from a Toyota wholly owned lage North West dealership. Initially when just a few days old I had a problem when the rear centre brake light dropped down dangled by it's wiring up against the rear screen I opted to have pprivacy glass film fitted by the dealerships specialist sadly the ** sorry person who carried out the work was clearly clueless as according to there service dept must have pulled/yanked the housing from it's original location stripping the original fixing threads but when refitting he discovered his error and used larger self tappers to disguise his ham fistedness and as a result the housing soon worked loose and detatched itself now the problem for me a customer was to try and convinced the three letter dealership that I did not the butcher the brake light housing myself and return to them for help under warranty I have to say that initially it was not easy however one eagle eyed tecnician confirmed that non original Toyota fixings had been used however there was absolutely no apology whatsoever from the dealership and I was advised to return a few days later when the part had arrived in stock. Later I was having major clutch judder problems and I returned to the South Manchester branch to ask for assistance the other branch said that because the car and film was fitted in there HQ branch the car had to be returned to them but any other problems could be dealt with at any other branch nearer home. Anyway the dealer made notes and refused to accept that the Toyota Yaris had any clutch judder issues, apparently car was checked out and released as to "manufacturers specifications" which I suspect is dealer jargon for yes there is a problem but it's acceptable. The clutch judder worsened especially when wet/cold and as a result I returned to Toyota's South Manchester/Cheshire premier dealership, this time as I got out of my vehicle I saw a technician who smiled (big mistake) so I asked him if there was any known cluth judder problems with the Yaris, "Yes a major issue we get them in all the time" was the response, "in fact Toyota have developed a modified clutch " I thanked him and he advised I book vehicle in and he would have a look at it. Having told service dept what I now know hey presto, it's a miracle, confirmation at last that a judder was evident and a date to return for futher investigation and if necessary a replacement. Dropped vehicle off and received a call to say parts on order and have arrived, car ready after 5pm. When I first drove the vehicle home there was no evidence of judder. Car left over night and as I tried to put car in reverse it crashed and made a grinding noise eventually it engaged and as I proceeded to work it was difficult to engage 2nd to 3rd and reverse in addition I also had problems coming down from 3rd to 2nd. I contacted the dealer that day they said just drop the car off again and we will check everything has been put back in the correct place? car returned and nothing found then I discovered problem was linked to the ambient temperature when close to freezing or below it was a real problem car returned to dealer again they contacted me and told me that they had could not detect a problem I pointed out that the night time temperature had not gone below 50 degrees they ignored this and the car was collected and after much frustration they took the vehicle and next day admitted that something was not right and we were informed that they had replaced the gearbox what we did not know of at that time was they replaced our gearbox from a registered vehicle on there forecourt? the manager said that that was quite acceptable? as the vehicle had only covered a nominal mileage. The vehicle appears exactly the same? Under a lot of protest the car was returned to them and driven by a toyota field service engineer who once again used the standard line gearbox within manufacturers specifications I pointed out that the problem is temperature specific can we delay until Jan/Feb when generally it's consistently colder NO was the response, I asked and what about relacing a suspect gearbox with not a brand new factory new gearbox but a gearbox out of a registered forecourt vehicle which had already been used it's our perogative to replace with what we feel is appropriate the registered forecourt vehicle is not a problem, your gearbox will become less troublesome with mileage. I would be interested in your comments clearly I feel that if the dealer felt it necessary to replac the gearbox it should of been replaced by a brand new gearbox directly from the factory, I am wondering where I stand legally could be wrong but it doed seem a dodgy practise. This thread has gone off topic.

I would remind members that they should keep posts "ON TOPIC" i.e. Yaris 08 Reversing Lights

Any further off topic postings in this thread may be deleted.

If you wish to discuss another topic then please do in a new thread

Hi Uptownbob, sorry to hear you're having problems with your car, and I can't really help on this one unfortunately but I hope you get it sorted soon and to your satisfaction.

Just a point though? Maybe the mods can move this post? There are a number of threads already open with respect to suspected clutch judder. If any open thread isn't particularly suited to what you want to say then it might be an idea to start a new one specific to your subject. There is also a recent thread inviting people to list everything wrong with their new cars.

This topic started off about reversing lights and sort of 'ran its course' when that subject was answered, both with the facts and also because the topic starter presumably got rid of his car.

I'm not decrying your problems with your car - far from it, I sincerely hope you will get them sorted soon - I just think that a better impact could be had if topic replies were kept more on subject and then the forum search engine is more specific, people can find what they want easier and helpful replies are more effective because they are in a more approriate thread.

Just a thought :) :) :)

Best wishes - Johnny

EDIT: ooops - simultaneous posting, though Red Yaris 54 put it more succinctly :)

Hi, Shame you decided to send the car back as, once sorted, most people tend to love their Yaris'.

As for the dealer, to say you do not have a reversing light... They should be shamed and hounded out of business! It is and has been for many years now, a LEGAL requirement to have a reversing light, along with a rear fog light.

It seems to be a recurring theme now with some dealers (and not just Toyota) that once you have parted with your money, they lose interest! lay them at their own game and suggest that you are going to replace the vehicle every two-three years... they seem a lot more helpful when they think they detect a new sale!

I always spend an age looking at the new models when getting my service done. Last time they even lowered the price as they thought I waited too long!

Just by chance I dropped in on the forum to see if anything had happened with my posts (and to see what other raging discontent there might be about the Toyota TinBox :D)

To recap, Mrs Fergus went stark staring mad and bought a new 1.3 Yaris TR. The dealer was useless and once they had the money adopted a "we've got your money we don't care" attitude.

On delivery the car was really badly prepared. One thing I noticed was that the reversing lights weren't working. The dealer said the car didn't have them... Then the clutch failed (smoke, smell, car no go), the dealer had been told from day 1 that the clutch was snatching but merely said that this was "normal" and would "bed in".

So we rejected the car and threatened recovery proceedings. Even Toyota Customer Services woke up! I paid for an engineer's report. He found five "dangerous" items, including brake lights not operative and rear lights incorrectly wired, plus a great list of "unacceptables". One of these was the replacement clutch / gearbox (reported by Toyota as "normal").

So we got our money back, plus the cost of hire cars (funny how the warranty wasn't honoured) and the cost of the report. And we did what we should have done in the first place and bought a Honda Jazz 1.4 Sport. This was perfectly presented and has has zero faults.

Talking to a former colleague last week he told me that he had bought a Yaris for his wife a year ago. The earache she gave him about the "useless little car" was so bad he bought her a Fiat Grande Punto (which apparantly she's delighted with).

Straw poll of two I know, but not good is it?
