'...Too much fuel?....'

The MOT tester should be more specific??

The problem may be due to a faulty Oxygen sensor. Unfortunately these are v. expensive as only a genuine part will work. There is a breakers in Stockton (JAP Parts) who will have one off the shelf. The staff there are quite helpful and still drive Carinas themselves. Give them a ring 01642 672255

Emissions faulures can be due to the tester. These cars need a bit of a coaxing to pass. I've used Cleveland Auto Services (off Newport Brige) for 15 years for MOTs and they are excellent. 01642 223636

Good luck
