Strange Engine Noise

Hello all,

my M-reg Carina E 2.0 GLi Estate has developed a rather strange rattle-ish noise from the engine. It sounded as if a heat shield was loose, but after popping up the bonnet, the noise actually came from the engine. This has me thinking it's a possible big end failure. The previous owners didn't exactly take care of it, and the oil filter came off in bits (rusted through completely). It's only done about 110k miles.

Does anyone else concur that the engine has had it?

There's a 3S-FE for sale on eBay, but not sure if it's worth it swapping the engine.

Any engine noise like that can't be good news, i would only investigate the prob if

i was doing the job myself cos a garage would be too expnsive and might aswell

get a new engine.

Cheap enough fix if you have the tools. Good luck with it anyway m8
