Rav4 Needs New Automatic Gearbox?

Hi,

Forgive me if this subject has come up elsewhere on the forum but I could not find it anywhere.

I have a 2002 RAV4 2lt Automatic. It has 48,000 miles on the clock, I do well under the yearly average miles and get the car regularly serviced at a main Toyota dealer. I am a careful driver, do not go off-road and do not tow with the RAV.

Imagine my horror when the gearbox started ‘jumping’ (for want of a better word) and I was told that no error codes were coming up upon inspection and the only solution would be a new gearbox.

On an Australian forum I found 2 guys who had experienced a similar problem. No error codes came up but when the computer that tells the gearbox when to change gear was changed, it solved the problem. Still expensive, but nowhere near as much as a new gearbox.

I’d be interested to know of anyone needing a new automatic gearbox in the UK for a similarly low mileage, well-maintained RAV. I would also be interested if anyone pushed Toyota to commit to pay at least some of the repair bill, as I plan to do.

Any help or advice gratefully received.

Hi berryadi, and welcome to the forum. There are a lot more knowledgeable guys than me on this forum, but I think it might be worth checking the automatic transmission fluid level as a first step. Sounds simple, I know, but sometimes the simple things..... More intellectual horsepower will be along later......

There are several reasons why your gearbox might behave in this way and before you have it changed it would be worth looking up an auto transmission specialist. As Robert says, start with the obvious and check the oil then you could either change the oil or discuss with the specialist about changing the transmission filter (don't try this yourself unless you are competent and confident as it requires some stripping of the gearbox). The gearbox takes 3.9 litres of ATF if you decide to change it and before you do look at the dipstick to make sure that the fuid is a deep red colour. Any brown or black discolouration probably indicates a fault or a fault has occured. The fluid level is best checked with the engine hot and running.

Ther are also other faults that will cause these symptoms like a faulty speed sensor but a good specialist will know all this.

Would certainly agree on Anchormans previous answer to this. Before I had the pleasure of being a Toyota

owner I had a V6 Nedflander It had the jerky Auto box problem which was cured by replacing

the speed sensor.

Toyota transmission, I have found, is over-engineered.

No way will the gearbox be knackered after such a low mileage - otherwise it would be a trades description job as not fit for purpose.

Find a specialist!!

hi by the sounds of it you'll need a new gearbox ecu, P0750 is a shift solonoid fault code, i bought a 02 Rav 4 2.0 GX Auto last year with the same fault code, we checked the solonoids and wiring by dropping the gearbox pan, i contacted www.cheaptoyotaparts.co.uk who virtually guaranteed it would be the ecu not the gearbox as he sells so many! He saved me £150 on a genuine toyota part, still not a cheap job tho, any competent mechanic can fit the ecu, u need a 5 sided torx screwdriver (sorry cant remember which size, just buy a cheap set off ebay) the ecu is located behind the glovebox and u need to program the keys to it, (if you buy from www.cheaptoyotaparts.co.uk he'll include instructions). Just to update on our gearbox probs.

Today we took it to the Auto gearbox specialist in Gravesend, they said they need to speak to the garage we bought the car from.

What gents, they have agreed to meet all costs, although they hope to get some costs back from the insurance. :)

Auto specialist confirms the fault code as P0750, says that the gearbox oil was slightly burnt, the clutch is burnt out, and the ECU is knackered.

So,

They are renewing the ECU, and re-coding 2 keys @£680.00 plus new clutch and overhauling the gearbox. ( Do not know costs )

Hopefully we will get it back by the weekend. Fingers crossed.

£2,567.05 to be precise.

To supply and fit 1 auto gearbox,

plus converter,

i new gearbox ECU,

Programing by Toyota.

Fortunately the insurace company and the garage we bought the car from have jointly honoured the costs.

She is certainly running a lot smoother now, although it may just be me but the MPG is hovering around 25 to 27 ?

Find a post from Bitman. He has 2 auto RAVs with live fuel data. You could also try cancelling the display and let it stabilise again.
