Brake Disc Premature Wear?

Took little Aygo to MrT yesterday to have the tracking checked as the steering wheel was VERY slightly not centred.

The car is nearly 2 years old and 13000miles so I would not get it done under warranty, MrT said (so I had it done by a local tyre specialist place today at a very reasonable cost) but they had the car "round the back" ( in the workshop... where mere mortals fear to tread) for a few minutes while they thought about it.

During this time they decided the front discs were "lipped", which they were, but not too bad, and that they would change them under warranty if I could wait for half an hour.No problem, nice new discs fitted, thanks Mr T.

I did not take the car in for a service, or inspection to do with the brakes, so why did they bother checking the disc condition?

My next service is due in a couple of months which the service manager mentioned when I booked the car in, so they knew it would not be long before it would be back in anyway.

Is there some concern in high places about the high wear rate of some Aygo discs?

I don't drive hard and the pads are hardly worn, but the discs certainly were, which is surely the wrong way round!

every time we have taken the car in it has come back with a safety check thing done - they give you a leaflet with the checks on it. seems to be part of the handover bck to the owner. might just be our dealer though.

we did have a rear drum collapse.....but all the pads have been fine....!

Yes, I reckon it was part of the "safety check" but my dealer doesn't give out a summary list on completion.

What I find odd is that the old discs were less than half way to their minimum thickness (I checked with a micrometer a couple of weeks ago, they were 19.5mm overall thickness) and an advisory note that they may need changed at the next service would have been sufficient.

Because every time you take your car in a VSR (Vehicle Safety Report) will be carried out on your car, as it says on the tin, it is a VISUAL safety report and is done as part of a duty of care when we have your car in for anything

Are you sure the discs are covered by the warranty? Oddly enough I was told just two days ago that my discs were lipped and the pads were 60-70% worn, and they said they'll charge me just over £250 for replacing them. My Aygo's 2.5years old and done 35K.

How much did others pay for replacing the pads and discs?

Yes, as I said I went in just to have the steering alignment checked.

I went for a walk and they rang me (on mobile ) to say while they were at it they would change the discs under warranty as they were slightly lipped.

Car is 18 months old and about 14000miles.

That is why I thought there may have been some low key service bulletin released advising dealers to keep an eye on the wear rate of some Aygo discs in case they were wearing more quickly than normal, due to perhaps faulty manufacture, and these discs should be changed under warranty.

Just guessing at a possible scenario which is probably rubbish...but the fact remains that my discs were changed under warranty!

I've had my front discs and pads replaced in warranty too at the last service...

My car squeeled like H*** when braking and had been doing so for over 20k mi.

So I mentioned it when booking the service and they looked at it.

There was a lip on the discs, so they replaced them AND the pads without cost.

They even didn't charge me an extra day for the loaner I had...

I've also had my brake disks replaced on warranty due to lipping

I've just had my discs skimmed under warranty as they were lippped and had to pay £83 for the pads as they were 75% worn ( i admit i brake late and hard at times.. my own fault )

Car is nearly 3 and i've owned it for a year ( previous owner was the ex so i know how it was driven lol )

Ahh good news, glad i'm not the only one, the discs on my Aygo look fine on the outside face, but both inside faces are very scored and the pads now only work on the middle 60% of the disk even though the pads have plenty of meat left on them. On top of that at least one of the discs is quite warped. I bought the car with only 2,000 miles on it so I am sure they are original.

I have it's second sevice booked for Thursday, hopefully as it's only done 14,000 miles the warranty police may change them at no cost.

Worst case senario a set of discs and pads are only £75 delivered and there is a very good how too guide on the forum.

When my Aygo went for a service they mentioned that the disc was lipped, but I understood that it's only a problem when the pads AND discs are on their wear limit. (i.e. the lip may cut into the brake pad plate). However, my pads had pleanty of life left. It's caused because the pad material was slightly too small

I've read that increased brake wear is a common consequence as everyone is forced to use asbestos free brake pads

Cost me £65 and a sunny afternoon. Toyota have been quoting £350 to do the same job, but there's nothing exotic about the Aygo brakes, so any competant garage should be able to do a good job for much less cash

Brake discs are covered by the warrenty if they wear out in less than 20,000 miles.

Mine has done 15,000 and need replacing. They're being replaced FOC tomorrow :)

EDIT : But they won't replace the pads. So I might need to order some! PARTS KING !!!

I have an Aygo Blue and have had it since new I took it in for service, its first when it was 1 year old with 7000 miles on the clock and complained that the brakes were juddering and scraping they said they had cleaned the pads although they put unable to find fault on the report (this is the dealers where i got the car).It seemed to be OK for a while but the problems came back. I took it back today it is 20 months old and has just under 10,000 on the clock and they said it wants new pads and discs and will cost £200+vat as the warranty does not cover it. At which i went off it anyway they agreed to do me a favour as a good will gesture!!!!!!! and skim the discs, which they did but i will not let it rest there.

Will let you know how i got on.........

Its strange. Mine is 5 months old, with just about 8000 miles on now, the disks are still as smooth as the day it was delivered ( feeling them though the alloy) I am quite a late braker as well! Wonder if they used different companies to supply the brake materials?

At my second service I needed to have the discs replaced as they were "warped" and I was told that it was general wear and tear and that they were not covered under warranty =(
