Noise Coming From Behind Steering Wheel

I have noticed that turning the steering wheel full lock and lock to lock, I am getting an annoying gyrating noise which seems to come from behind the steering wheel. Had it checked by a mechanic who says its not the steering rack and just needs lubrication to the steering "components". Also, the steering is a little too heavy.

Any ideas ?

as said above, if its the old shape avensis then it will be the steering rack. The bush around the pinion becomes dry and noisy - the noise then 'travels' up the steering column and sounds as if its behind the steering wheel.

We did plenty of these through warranty a few years ago - you could just repack with grease instead of spending £900 on a gen rack!!

Mart. :)

I've got the old shape avensis, and the moaning sound from the steering wheel is driving me nuts.

Heck, if I only could sort it out I would keep the darn thing forever. :)

Moonstone Mart. could you please put an arrow on the pics below, or at least tell me where to put the grease.

I guess we're quite a few who would appreciate some help on this matter.

i dont know how to put arrows etc on things - photoshop etc do my head in! lol

you need to grease the part of the 'rack that the steering column bolts onto.

In the first pic it is the shaft pointing upwards just above where the power steering pipes screw in, take off the plastic cover and pack as much grease in as you can then refit the cover.

This should sort out the groan.

Mart.

gazza, as far as I can see, that link describes a clonking sound, which is not my problem.

In my case it's more of a groaning metal-to-rubber sound.

This link is what you need:

The post by Treuno explains the problem and exactly where the grease needs to be applied.

Tis is a different problem being discussed here gazza.

Its the actual pinion shaft in the rack that needs lubricating for the groan noise which 'travels' up the column.

I didn't get the opportunity to look into it this weekend,

but the next I'm sure I will. I'll let you know how it went.

Got on to it today (the only day the irritating sound wasn't there. typical ey?).

There already was some grease under the cover. Maybe some of moonstone

mart's friends had already been there some years ago. :P

Well, I sprayed some crc 5-56 around the seal and yanked around with

a double bent steel wire to get the muck where it would do most use.

Now I guess only time will tell if my troubles are over. Hope they are.

Fingers crossed. :)

And? Problem still gone?

Did you do it inside the car down by the pedals? (There is a round black cover where the steering column is going in!)

Had to repeat the procedure after one year or so, with engine oil this time.

Still silent to this day.

I did not lubricate anything in the pedal area, but under the bonnet.

Okay, and you had a Squeaky steering wheel like: rubber on rubber / rubber against metal / rubber against glass ??

And you put some grease where the arrow is pointed?

I think i have the same problem... I will try to put some grease there tomorrow!

Yes. And engine oil seems to be even better than grease.

A few drops should do it.

I hope it will do the job for me. (I will let you know!)

My toyo mechanic told me to replace the rack... 800 euro (All-in)

He is also willing to replace the airbag-coil (saturday, october 1) as a test because that could be also my problem... (free of charge)

I'm back from the dealer... We did the test with the airbag-coil and the trick with the engine-oil.

Nothing worked, so the noise is still there!

Thank you!

I will try to do this!

It must be a seal underneath the 1st one what causes the noise!

To be continued! ;)

Update!

I cannot get behind the seal... It's to stiff... It feels like it's made of hard plastic!

I have made a video of the noise.

http://youtu.be/C9-Qr4P62YY

Could it still be the rack? Or is it the column?

As far as I can remember, the steering rack seal sound, was more

like the one on the video below.

Hmm, thats another sound...

My sound is more rubber against rubber or rubber-glass or rubber-metal...
