Stuttering Yaris Help Needed

Hi All

I am the proud owner of a 2005 1.3 colour collection Yaris in Black. Untill 2 months ago everything was great with the car, until it started to develop a stuttering intermitantly. When I came to lights the revs would go up and down and occassionally stall. This got progressivly worse and would lurch and stutter even at 70 on the motorway.

I took it to my local garage (sorry Toyota didn't want to pay the prices) and first of all he welded up a hole in our exhaust. This made no difference to the stuttering but did make it sound better.

Then we took it back to the garage and he replaced the O2/Lambda sensor, and blanked the carbon solenoid valve which he said he could hera when he had his head in the engine bay. This cured it for about 2 days and the stutter returned.

We took it back for a replacement carbon solenoid valve, this made the car feel sluggish at first, then the stutter returned...

I am now at a loss what to do... so far its cost me roughly £300 in parts an labour and I'm getting nowhere fast, my wife and I are losing confidence in the car, and the garage.

Please advise.

Thanks Ryan

Is this something I can do myself to try and keep the costs down, or are they fairly cheap to replace.

Thanks again

your best bet is obviously eBay, but makesure you get a second opinion on wot i may think it is cos i dont want you to waste your money and it stil not cure the problem, as for fitting it, shouldnt take you that long. have you got a standard air filter? if not i have bin told your life span on the MAF is shortend when pushin more air through than a standard filter.

hope ive bin help.

Hi

Why not go to Toyota and ask them what is wrong with it.... probably cheaper in the long run, may cost 1/2 hour labour to diagnose, then say you will get it done next month and book it in at a cheaper garage, cheaper than just replacing stuff thats fine....

Just a thought

Pete

Well the saga continues, toook out the MAF sensor and its as clean as a whistle, gave it a good blow with condensed air just in case. I replaced the air filter (again just in case) I removed the coil packs they were all extremly clean, checked the spark plugs and they were also very clean.

The car still stalls and lurches, I may have to get it in to Toyota and see what it is (Thanks Pete). The diagnostics on the machine at the first garage gave no error codes, do Toyota have machines that read diferently?

Who knows.

OK here goes..took it into Toyota today and they hooked it up to the diagnostic computer, which returned no codes as the previous garage had also reported, so they just decided to rip it apart and find out the cause, and the mechanic has typed up the following, brackets are my comments

Removed air flow meter and check for defect (This was not the cause)

Checked crankshaft sensor assembly and continuity (This was not the cause)

cleaned the throttle position sensor assembly (This was the cause woohoo!)

applied fuel treatment

no futher codes or faults.

Total cost £236

Interestingly enough, the mechanic has asked us to find out what a carbon solenoid valve part number is, because he couldnt find where the other garage mechanic has replaced anything (How strange, poss rip off)

total cost overall £552!

The moral of the tail always take it to Toyota. It is expensive but will save you in the long run, in my case £316.

Hope this helps someone else.

OK we've found out that the part he actually fitted was a manifold vacuum valve, and hasn't overcharged us, but the Toyota mechanic has said it wouldn't have been the first thing he'd have replaced. Looks like i'll have to pay up after all.

The topic is virtually 11 years old and the original poster last visited the club in September 2008, so contacting them now, even via personal message, is unlikely to elicit a response.
