Just wanted to say that Jerry said it all. I never used to post a lot because i know a lot of there were a lot of haters - stereotyped me as boyracer max muppet whatever. tbh though, i didn't care, i was happy with my car, plenty of girls were :P so why the hating?

So many people who post try to sound superior to 'boyracers' as if they are on a next level, wtf? Why not respect that someone's put effort into their car to make it look like what they want to and exactly as Jerry said, not everyone can afford better cars, so they make do.

Chill, get off your high horse and acknowledge hard work and effort. As opposed to just paying people to do it all the time, those with the Novas etc often are the true modifiers in the world who do things themselves instead of just buying off a shelf and paying someone (i admit i pay people, but i try it myself first).

You have to earn respect.

btw if you think i'm out of line, tell me but this is what i think.

agree with your point on people thinking they're superior to boyracers on the next level seany, anyone who modifies a car immidiately shares the same interest.

however, there are two ways to modifying cars;

1) well thought out, tasteful additions that compliment a car to make it look better.

2) badly designed additions that people put on a car just for the sake of it, i.e. flat bodykits on a curvy car.

anyone can slap big wheels on a car, buy a bodykit etc.... doing it in a stylish tasteful way is much harder though.

and that goes for any car, not just non-toyota/japanese.

i agree with sam too

it can be done right on the right car

or vice versa on th wrong car with wrong parts

but at the end of the day we can be badged as boy racers, even i do by my parents! neighbours etc.... cos ive got huge rims, a loud exhaust, and an install you can hear from the next town and a drive a bit mental sometimes!!!

but i dont care cos i dont drive a std unoriginal run of the mill saloon car!

Yeah, but I do drive a run of the mill motor, just with alloy wheels!

I still get called a boy racer (21, 22 in a few weeks and still 'boy racer' when do you become a man racer???)

we're all boy racers at heart, even the MR2 guys who would deny it to their graves...

boy racer is a term that's become very loosely used these days, any youngish guy who drives a quick car, or a car with big wheels, or a car with a sound system, etc etc is tagged 'boy racer'

if you're gonna play around with your car then you're gonna have to put up with the tag!

there's a few levels of 'boy racer' though... that can be measured by both age and financial resource :) :bookworm: allow me to explain :P

1) tiny engined small cars & big body kits coupled with loud exhausts & soundsystems = classic 17-20 year old boy racer.

2) large engined coupe's/ RWD racers/ HOT hatches - more of an enthusiast than boyracer now, he's growing up a bit and deciding his need for speed is not just a phase... age 20-25

you get the idea... the stereotype comes from young lads not being able to afford fast cars, so instead put their efforts towards making them look 'fast' instead i suppose...

wise words mate

i gotta admit (unless already known?) i had a 1.3 escort van  for my first motor. totally kitted with a massive RS exhaust fitted to it  so im a classic 'max muppet' if ya will (although i dont care!) still tho it got nicked about a month before a 180bhp turbo lump weas about to be fitted :ffs:

but now i feel this cars a touch more classy - ok its still headed in the same direction but its just so much more exclusive than the streams of novas, r5's and saxos ya see thrapseing round the local cruise circuit

At the end of the day, it comes back to what you like I suppose.

It doesnt really matter what anyone else thinks if 'you' like it you like.

moddings a bit like marmite, either you love it or you loath it!

Hi everyone

So what category do i come into then? 34 years old in June :yes:Perhaps Man Racer :lol::lol:

At the end of the day if i were to fit a spoiler or a exhaust to my car and it was a bit over sized or different looks weird. Who cares. If i like it then i dont really care about what everyone thinks. It's my car at the end of the day.

Like I've said many times before. If it pleases you then it is right. People may criticise what they see on other peoples cars but it's the owners personal choice. We are all different at the end of the day. I like red you might like blue etc, etc.

Again if I'm not keen of a person's modification to a car i wouldn't slat the owners car i would keep this thought to myself. As the owner would have put a lot of time and money into this mod.

It takes guts to modify a car. Especial if it's a modern car with nothing wrong with it and you chop it to bit's. I would what the respect from fellow modifiers. Not people gunning it as it's not of there preference.

jerry!!

I agree, but then its all about perspectives. It depends what the owner wants from his car, to drop jaws or to be subtle.

A lot of the Max Power lot want to be different, thats why sometimes they do mods that a lot of people don't like, maybe in their heads it looks great, it shouldn't matter. People shouldn't slate it outright.

Yarisboy i don't agree that anyone can just slap kits on etc, you don't know what they went through raising the money for it, fitting or whatever, so if you don't like it, and say it straight out, what if the owner reads it? Don't care? You haven't considered their feelings at all, maybe they put loads of effort into their car and you have just crushed their feelings by ONE comment. Its not right is it, not everyone can shrug those comments off...maybe you should be more tactful with your opinion.

Everyone seems to understand my point, but i'm sure they won't stop using Novas etc as examples. I read on another post or forum about the Metro 6r4 and a lot of people were saying to looked crap. Then finally someone knew about the car and that fact that it goes 0-60 in 4.1secs standard. This changed a lot of opinions on it, but it still looked the same.

So if a Nova had the 2.0l conversion and was much quicker, you would still say its crap etc? Why? Is it jealousy that causes people to defend their cars and say 'well my car's still better, its superior'? Its def not quicker thats for sure.

Why can't people respect that someone made an effort of turning a not so fortunate car (looks or speedwise) into a monster? Put away your jealousy and be more appreciative.

Well i've said a bit, don't suppose anyone will change though, at least i said what i felt needed to say, someone had to support the Max Power muppets.

P.S. I don't normally buy Max Power, but i bought it today :P

Seany,

fundamental points are there and I can see why you think everyone should treat each other fairly about their cars... but it's simply not like that.

and I think it's more about snobbery than jealously, snobbery exists everywhere in life from the clothes you wear, the watch you wear, the house you live in, the school you went to, and in this case the car you drive.

The reasons I have such dim views on heavily modified cars is because 99% of the people near me all do it in saxo's and corsa's ... there's quite a comical white punto around too now but that's another story.

It's because when these people get out of their massively modified cars they are wearing a burberry cap, kappa track suit and orange trainers... and start to look at you in a 'i'm harder than you' way ... that's when it becomes offensive to me.

or they wait outside the school gates at lunch time preying on 15-16 year old girls to impress with their F&F rides... most of these guys are 20+ ... get a life.

this is when opinions and stereotypes are forged, and is also why many people myself included do not buy into this heavy modding scene.

and I still stand by that anyone can throw money at their car, and even if they have to save for it that's no excuse in my mind to do a bad job on it!

just to clarify with my final point, i'm not saying that everyone with a big body kit and thumping soundsystem is a burberry scum... i'm just saying I cannot buy into that scene because of the people I know to be in it.

Hmmm this is a difficult topic! *jumps in the ring* :boxing: :P

Seany I believe it was me that pointed out about the Metro 6R4  , which leads me onto the fact that although I'm guilty of stereotyping these people occasionally, I can see the plus points of any car, including a Nova, because I love car's in general especially modded up one's. :)

I can also see where Sam is coming from. Alot of these people are complete a-holes, not because of what they drive or wear but because they're just morons who don't understand car's or modifying in the way we do but try & join in, hence these ugly creations made out of older cars like Novas, Escorts etc!

They stereotype themselves because they haven't grown out of that school-like faze of trying to fit in with the best trainers or the right jumper and it shifts onto the car's.

I used to have to serve these people where I used to work in a cinema & they're all clones of one another, hence the burburry cap syndrome, does that not go against the flow of what modifying is about? Being different!

Anyway hope I haven't offended anyone but like Sam I do find these in-your-face people 'offensive' because I had enough of them in my previous life. I agree that buying Max Power doesn't make you one of these people as I buy it occasionally & never make a secret of it!

Thats just my 2c & the most I've ever written in a post so I'm off now! :bye:
