Just came across a site offering new-style Avensis exported from Japan with 4WD in the 2L petrol version, and I've confirmed that it exists on the Japanese Toyota page. Anyone know if this model is available in Europe?

sorry no. the reason the JDM get a lot of 4WD cars is cos of their climate. the have to carry snow chains or smow tires by law as you can go from a clear road to a snow covered road in a few miles when you get toward the mountains.

although its 4WD it is an automatic so dont think they would sell enough over this side of the world

:( Thanks for the info. I still think that it's a shame, because there are several European countries that also have laws requiring chains or specialised tyres (not here really, though some roads are closed unless you have chains from Jan-Mar).

I was curious because I was discussing the new Avensis with a few people in the past few weeks, and we came up with two things missing in the current range: a 4WD version and a big petrol engine (3 litre V6 or similar). I thought that I had just found the former :D

BTW does anyone know if the Japanese market versions are built in the UK?

Avensis - interesting - didn't know this:

didnt know of a 4wd avensis

Thanks for the article. Very interesting to see how they sell the Avensis to the Japanese. Basically what they're saying is: It's a European car!" :P

I don't know if the new Avensis is still based on any other Toyota model. It was designed by Toyota's European design branch, based a few miles up the road from me.

Any case I didn't know about the 4WD version either until ten minutes before posting my original message :D

Well, derived in the sense of "The start of the word kinda sounds like, wouldn't you say?"
