mr2-02.jpg

Somebody wants to sell me this for £4,000.

It has about 70k on the clock and it's a non-turbo model.

I was gonna save up and get a TT Supra but I'd be 21 with 3 years NCB so insurance would be damn steep.

Bearing in mind that I'd be coming from a 1.6 Golf anyway, I would imagine the MR2 would be plenty fast enough? I'm no stranger to dabbling in fast cars but the Supra would probably scare the crap out of me a bit.

The MR2 is sexy , that's for sure, and for the price of a Supra TT (call it 8-9k) I would imagine I could turbo the MR2 in to the bargain? Then again you can buy MR2 T-Bars for considerably less than that on Autotrader, but none are perhaps quite as good looking.

Should I go for it?

very nice .. it's not really worth turbo'ing the MR2 - it's expensive, really requires an engine swap and insurance companies charge more than an import !!

The MR2 will keep you happy until you are 25 and want (and can get insurance for) a Supra TT ..

OK, sod that...

But what about the price?

I'd end up spending a bit on alloys and an exhaust already, and this car already has those...

But is it still a bit steep?

The mileage is pretty good.

4k for a GOOD rev3 isn't bad ..

I'd suggest getting a local MR2 owner to have a look with you .. I'm happy to help if it's in the Reading area.

Is it a UK car or an Import (cant see ANY side repeaters) .. check out the chassis number against a list I posted in the MR2 section (Here) to find out if it's a true rev3 ..

I'm finding out the chassis number tomorrow. Need to chat to the guy directly. If it's an import I guess I might have to give it a miss.

Apparently that's 2k's worth of rims on that car so it's not looking quite so bad price-wise (if it's true). The car itself is mint, and apparently the guy who owns it drives it like a granny!

I live in Guildford but the car itself is in the Essex area. If you don't mind a trip I'd really appreciate you coming along. If not, no worries - It won't be for a few weeks yet.

Cheers!

I don't mind a day out over a weekend .. I'll drive (if you pay petrol !!) my MR2 over and you can see the differences.

The imports are the same as the UK ones - just come with a better spec as standard .. insurance is usually okay too .. there are a few specialists about who can get good quotes.

That would suit me fine. Cheers!

I'll definitely give you a shout about that nearer the time.

My main concern is the insurance. It'll definitely be a hell of alot better than the Supra would be, but do you have a rough idea of how much it might cost? I know the car itself is group 15.

Erm, speak to Chris Knott (number in the corner on this site) or dorset (www.dorsetinsurancegroup.co.uk).

I think you'll be looking at about £800 .. on "average" details.

the thing with dorset is you have to join the MR2 Drivers Club (www.mr2dc.com) for about £30 a year ..

£800 is great news.

Thanks a bunch for your help.

This is looking more and more like a dead cert, although I still have to check the thing out, of course!

@ Jerry - It is a bit of a looker, isn't it! My girlfriend has already said that if I get it she wants to be driven everywhere *cough*yeahright*cough*

My main concern is that it satisfies my thirst for fun until I can afford something balls-out fast!

I would like a Levin - as an aside .. the next Levin will be the same as the next Altezza I heard.

I also didn't realise till this weekend how low insurance the 'seo was - jammie git.

That example looks awsome exterior wise!. Im betting its a rev2 no way would some1 go thru the trouble of gettin rid of side repeaters. But I can imagine some1 gettin rid of the annoyin toblerone thingys. Remeber mate even tho its done 70k if its been maintained itll be far superior to a thrashed example with 40k.

Plus at 70k itll have done its major 60k service so its happy drivin till 120k. BUT dont ever ever buy the first example. Check a few others out of the same year. This is important as the rev2s and rev3s have different generation 3SGEs.

Its tempting tho..I think it looks superb mate and is perfect for your current situation imo. (ive read your supra post) Good luck

Decided I'm gonna go for it (well, have a good look). :D

This decision is largely based on the fact that five girls have already said they want me to take them out in it and partially based on the fact that it'll be a good first RWD car, and the mid-engined business will warm me up for when I can afford my Miura! ;) B)

And it won't completely demolish my bank account, which is nice.

You MR2 boys must lead interesting lives lol!

mr2 is a good choice!

To be honest alot of people under estimate how much it costs to maintain a supra! These cars are not cheap. Turbo versions are heavy on fuel and very expensive parts.

Lower suspension arms are £250 each.. alternators are approx £400.. Turbos 2k for parts + fitting

These cars are not your golf prices for parts.. Supra is a super car.. and if Toyota have anything to do with parts then you have to be prepared to pay the price!

Just about affording one is not good enough.. no good if its stuck on your driveway because you cannot afford to insure it or buy parts for it.

Now.. my soarer is very similar... high costs in fuel... scarey when things go wrong (luckily not alot for my car) Same insurance group as a supra and I am paying £750 with 15 years NCB.. never claimed before... parked on driveway with alloys wheels as a modification.

I would seriously wait until you can afford to keep it running and maintained properly.

hope thiis helps ya!
