There is an adjuster in the rear brake drums for the handbrake.

The handbrake shoes are designed to last the life of the car and it's unusual for them to need replacing. However the cable may need adjusting every few years, and very occasionally the brakeshoe clearances may need attention.

You would normally do the cable first, then if that doesn't cure the problem do the clearances. But you then have to do the cable again.

Cable adjustment

The handbrake cable is adjusted from inside the car. Take the centre console out and the adjuster is underneath. What you're aiming for is between 4 and 7 clicks on the lever.

To access the adjuster you need to do the following -

· Unscrew and remove the gearknob

· Carefully pull out the gear stick console - 4 clips

· Undo the 2 small screws (1 either side) that are visible on the top of the join in the centre console pieces

· Inside the storage compartment there are 2 12mm bolts to undo

· The console should now be movable and you can slide it away to access the cable adjustment nuts - on the passenger side of the handbrake on RHD models.

· Adjust then re-assemble.

Brakeshoe clearances

To do the brakeshoe clearances you need the back wheels off of the ground with the handbrake released.

Safety point I would recommend absolutely flat ground, chocking the front wheels and supporting the rear with axle stands. (seriously, people die every year, crushed by badly supported cars)

Take the wheel off then put the wheel nuts back (finger tight will do).

Remove the plug from the face of the brake drum and rotate the drum to line up the hole with the adjuster behind it (should be at the bottom).

Using a flat screwdriver, notch the adjuster upwards until the shoes are against the drum and the drum won't move, then turn it back 8 notches.

Put the plug back, put the wheel back on, then do the other side.

Now adjust the cable again and you should be good to go.

Settling the handbrake

If new handbrake shoes are fitted, the following is necessary.

· Drive the vehicle at about 30mph on a safe, level and dry road.

· With the parking brake release button pushed in, pull on the lever with 98 N (19.8 lbf) of force.

· Drive the vehicle for about 400 metres (0.25 miles) in this condition.

· Repeat this procedure 2 or 3 times.

· Check and adjust parking brake lever travel.
