Avensis Brake Pads And Disks Replacement Guide

Hi,

After having 140K miles on my Toyota Avensis GS 2L TD I desided to change the brake disks together with the pads

Googled for this kind of job and was not able to find such a guide for this model of the car

So here is, short on words but well illustrated (i hope ;))

THIS GUIDE IS TO HELP TO DO THIS JOB FOR PEOPLE WITH SOME EXPERIENCE IN FIXING CARS. If you not sure about some steps - please

ask some competent person to do this

1. Tools required. The spanner is 17mm and bolts are 7mm (I think).

2. You need to jack up the car on both sides as it is much easier when you can turn the wheels. Park yor car, neutral gear, but handbrake. Put some bricks under rear wheels. Juck up one side, remove the wheel and use axle stand or (i used) the actual wheel with wood on top

3.Only two big nuts holding brake pads enclosure:

4.Those bolts could be quite tight, you may need to use long armed ring spaaner. Also don't forget to remove retaining spring using plain screw driver (arrowed on the pic). I did next and it worked easy:

6. Then whole thing it taken off easily. Remove the old pads from the enclosure. Don't put much strain on the rubber pipe

7. Hang the enclosure on the spring and it is good to secure it with some wire

8. Do a few light bangs by hammer to the brake disk. Nothing is holding it bur rust

9. Than screw in two bolts as on the picture. When you crew them in - the disk will pop out

10. I cleaned the hub with wire brush, applied some braking liquid with a brush to clean the rust, and applied some copper grease

11. Cleaned by metholated spirit brake disk can be installed now, and secured by two nuts. Install the brake pads into bracket. Mount whole bracket on the disk. Screw it with two bolts (back side)

12. Undo two wheel nuts from the disk and you can put the wheel back!

Great posting, nice one with the pics etc.

Just out of interest, where did you get the pads and discs, and how much did you pay?

My disks are due for replacement at the next brake pad change so it pays to shop around!

Thanks

Mike

any autoparts shop should be able to order them, big ones will stock it

Here in Ireland I paid 105 euro for set of disks and pads.

You save a fortune on garage labor which can go up to 200 euro i suppose!

Copper grease on the back of the pads also where the wheel centre hole sits on the disc and on any threads likely to seize up.

Be careful when easing the pistons back as the brake fluid reservoir may overflow if you have been topping up as the pads have worn down.

This would also be a great time to change the brake fluid which i think Toyota recommend every 20,000 miles.

Regards Pete.

I'm about to replace the disks and pads all round on my 2004 avensis tourer. Do I use the same process to change the rear disks as the fronts? Or is there a different procedure due to the handbrake acting on the rear wheels?

Noted comment "fluid returning to master cylinder" Could carefuly purge the old fluid through the bleed nipple, top up resevoir with new fluid.

Thanks for this guide - very useful!

Do the caliper mounting bolts have to be renewed or can they be re-used with loctite thread compound...

Cheers

Mark
