D4d Injector Problem

Got a loud diesel knock/rattle when engine is cold. Seems to be coming from 1 injector. Only does it when engine is under light load, ie seems ok on tickover and ok when i floor accelerator pedal. Got a few questions regarding this.

Can the injectors be tested through diagnostic socket, if so can any fuel injection specialist do this or is it Mr T only.

Can the injectors be repaired or is it new ones only.

Is it ok to replace just one injector. (Mr t seems to replace all 4 from other posts i have read)

Can any fuel injection specialist do the compensation codes after fitment of the injectors or is this Mr T only.

Is this the norm for a 05 43000 miles D4D, It seems to be a common problem looking at previous posts.

Are the replacement injectors the same part No. or are they improved quality.

Cheers Geoff

To taxigeoff,

This is one case i would leave car with Toyota to deal with, presuming you do have injector problem. You can read off generic codes for injectors ex: P0261 = meaning cylinder 1 injector circuit low? You cannot do much with that, that's a code produced by cheepo hand held code reader. Your injectors are electronically controlled as to old style units with spring in side which open when a certain pressure is reached.

That's why you need Toyota in this case, because they have the high end Toyota hardware which can test each injector properly & set-up new injectors. You could use outside company but will have to insure they have high end diagnostic equipment which can carry out full procedure.

This is normal for Toyota & all other manufacturers aswell. Hope it is some other problem, because if injectors are at fault it will be pricey.

Regards, Beagh.

hello

the mounting method of each injector is so complicated.

So in order to safe your nervous; time; money -- it is rezonable to leave this job for MrT garage.

Normally in case you have one injector faulty -- it is a signal that the anothers will be faulty soon and it is better to test all four.

Thanks Beagh and Igor

Looks like its MrT then. My only concern is if the diagnostic throws up a blank because it only happens under certain conditions.

They can check the values on each injector on the Toyota tester therefore detecting the faulty injector ;)

Sorry for late reply, bin a bit busy ;)

Depends on dealer I'm afraid, sometimes only takes a few minutes to see if an Injector is out of its parameters but some centres will charge a set fee,we usually dont tend to charge if only takes 5-10 mins (unless we're getting used) ,we find that if you try and be helpful etc you tend to get the work ;)

Quick update on this.

Rang toyota customer relations who agreed with me that even though out of warrant the injectors should not fail at 44000 miles, they told me to take it to toyota garage.

Garage have said they need car for 3 days to remove injectors and send away to have them tested then they will ring cutomer relations to determin what percentage of the cost they will pay.

I will update on this when i get car back.

Got car back today with 4 new injectors. Total cost £1339

Now toyota relations are refuseing to contribute due to not haveing toyota service history. I told them about no toyota service history when i first rang and they said it would just lower the percentage that they paid.

This is my 3rd toyota in 12 years and i have noticed that each one is worse than the last one. Just wondering what to get for my next taxi. Volvo deisel auto maybe. Any suggestians?

To taxigeoff,

Your possibly considering a Volvo to operate as a taxi as you requested suggestions, on the whole a good car. As a taxi driver you will be munching the miles, front A/R/Bar bushes & links would be a wear & tear item i think we could agree. If roll bar bushes fail on Volvo, you will not be buying bushes, but a complete roll/bar with bonded bushes. And just to make it more interesting you will have to remove numerous exhaust brackets & heat shields to access bar, now for the good part you then have to drop rear engine subframe to access bar for renewal. And all this to renew a bog standard bush, they may have given the world the seatbelt, but they draw the line at A/R/Bar bushes.

Just something to think about if your looking for a car to earn your living with.

Regards, Beagh.

Nearly bought a skoda irishjay when i bought this but decided to go for the avensis and reliability instead. My previous 2 avensis where trouble free. Looks like we are getting to the stage when you have a fault with your car it costs more to fix than the car is worth.

Thanks for that info regarding Volvo Beagh1958 looks like Volvo are out of the equation then.

like anything. newer toyotas have more technology in them than old ones. like everything the more complicated the bigger the chance of faliure

it would sem that there is no perfect common rail engine e.g. Ford TDCis have their own common faults.

hello Geoff

there are many competitors belong to a cars Brands and each tries to be the first with their models proposals.

The more cars the worse quality resulting the client's headache.

As to the total cost you stated - it looks like not competitive for four injectors + labour + VAT.

May be YOU'd to find reliable garage instead of dealership.

Cheers/Igor
