Wet Front Footwell

Hi guys, have brought a 2001 Yaris sr just over two weeks ago, and last night got into the car and noticed that the passenger footwell was soaking wet, and there was a small amount of water in the drivers footwell.

It hasn't rained badly for the last few days, but we did was the car just over a week ago. Was just wondering if this was a common problem and what it could be?!

Thanks for you help

Is the water clear or stained, does it smell, is it warm or cold, do you have air con etc etc

sorry i should have put a bit more info in. It hasn't stained so i would think that it ts clear, and it is cold, but it could have been in there a while before we discovered it. When i smelt it, it either has no smell, or a very very faint almost soapy smell, but as the car was thoroughly cleaned when we got it, this could have been a cleaning product used on the carpets. We do have AC but have never used it as we use the standard heater and fan instead at the moment.

ok just went out to investigate and the main area of wetness is along the carpet under the door on the passenger side.

In my experience it is very unusual to have a leaking Yaris. The doors have double seals. Are all the seals in place and fixed properly? Any previous accident history (HPI checked)? Is it under warranty? If you got it from Mr T then it may be worth a visit back.

As you have had it only 2 weeks, the car was possibly washed prior to you collecting it. It may be something innocent as leaving the window slightly open if a pressure washer was used.

I would try and dry it out as much as you can and see if it happens again after some rain or a good wash but making sure everything is shut

Full history came with it, and clear hpi. only failed mot once on faulty break light bulb. All the seals look fine to me but im no car expert. Oh well hopefully its nothing serious and is just that the water got in when it was washed. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for your help

Hi

I have exactly the same fault in my Yaris. Front foot well of passenger seat is soaking. Checked the brake fluid and engine coolent all fine. Lifted up the carpets and foam and polystrene and the whole passenger side front is soaking. Right from under the glove box (glove box itself is dry). Thought the leak must be from the windscreen. Went to a specialist windscreen firm in Bolton who had a good look and set that they were 99% sure it wasn't from the wind screen,as there is no damge internally to the uphosterly and the windscreens are vulcanised on to the frame in production, as rarely fail unless its been in a crash or the windscreen has been smashed.

Looked up the fault online, came across this listing and another one, where it turned out to be a leaking gromet. If your radio aerial is at the front they suggest checking that this isn't leaking. If the aerial is at the back then ignore it.

Took my 2003 Yaris to my Dad's. He took my windsceen wipers off and removed the "holey" plastic trim that externally runs along the bottom of the windscreen to check that no drain holes were blocked. There are no holes but drain slots that run to underneith the front tyres. Next he took off the front passenger tyre and then proceeded to (with difficulty) removed the fastners of the plastic trim under the wheel arch (be warned the plugs are like mini plaster board ties and you new to refit new ones once removed). We could then see where the drain hole was for the rain water. My Dad laughed at the poor design as right below the water drain is a gromet rubber plug. My Dad has silcone sealed the gromet plug and spoke to Toyota, they state they "haven't seen many off these problems". After searching the internet on different search engines I beg to differ.

So if anyone has this fault or has experienced it, sign up to this site and log it. My car is currently in a garage with a fan heater sat in it trying to dry it out before it causes electrical damage or starts to rot my carpets. My foam has come out, one piece had to be carved out with a stanley knife as its glued down. I have rinsed and rinsed and so far we are at 4 pints of clear water. When you cut out the foam that goes under your glove box we could saw where the rain water had been entering from behind the passenger tyre. Well hopefully its is sorted.

There is a drain plug under the passenger seat that maybe causing your leak (ie, surface water spraying up if its not sealed tight). However if the water goes over the polysterene (heading up to the glove box) then it is run from above, as water from the floor drain plug would not be able to cross this barrier.

Personally I really hacked off and if I didn't have my Dad at hand to help sort out the problem then I would be able to afford to put it right as Toyota would want hundreds to find the fault and then fix it, when its a bad piece of engineering and should be recalled to put right.

Sounds scary Laura. I've owned my SR for just over a year now and never had this problem. That's not to say it couldn't happen though.

Sounds like you have it sorted now, but thanks for the fix info. If i have a wet floor now i'll know where to look. ;)

Cheers.

Thanks for your help Laura. I'm beginning to think its either the door seals, or the aerial from what your post has said. The majority of the water was on the mats, and some areas of the carpet underneath were dry, which seems to suggest that the water has gone onto the mats from above, rather than coming from underneath the car.

Hi guys, just to update. Was watering the car with my watering can and found water in the roof lining, around the aerial area. So took off the roof lining, took off the aerial and put silicon to seal it up. Well it rained yesterday and the floor got wet again, took off the cladding for the passenger side pillar and found a whole load of water in it. so.......

Either i am not the master of silicon i thought i was or the leak is coming form the door seals/windscreen.

Will keep updated until i solve the problem

There was a manufacturing defect that causes leaks. Many 2001/2002 cars were affected. Contact Totoya Gb customer services for more info. A dealer fixed mine for free well outside warranty when the car was 5 years old. Basically it's a pin hole in the sealant of a body seam weld.

Could this cause leaking into the rear drivers side footwell? Where abouts is this pin hole in the body seam weld located?

Jon.

It's around the bulhead left hand side. (when sitting in the car)

Yes both front and rear footwells were water logged. Mine leaked so bad that Toyota even replaced the carpets for me FOC.

hi I found on my 04 that the bulkhead leak is where the gulley outflow from the engine compartment (passenger side) sits on top of the wheelsrch. You need to wipe sealant in just under the lip, with your fingertip, cleaning it first with white spirit. hope this helps. Andy
