going through my second childhood i decided to buy a mushroom air filter for my avensis, however i have a problem with how to fit it, i have taken the air box out and put the filter on the rubber type hose but i do not know what to do with the two sensors that did attach to the old box, when i run the car without them connected it does not rev above 3000 without choking itself, if i connect them the car does not start at all

Hello again

friendly speaking i dislike to instal any additional equipment other than original.

I do not think you get more power or even more petrol economy, but only spend money for add. In case this new mashroom type filter has more capacity - you only win with lifetime and purchasing rate. May be someone is more experienced with this one and can correct my point of view.

Cheers/Igor

Hi! Back in the good old days your mod was dead easy and did work but I agree with Igor on the advantages, not great really. I had a word with my son who modifies and races Nissan Skylines and his advice is .... unless the free flow air filter was designed as a direct replacement and has adapters for the maf and air temp sensor forget it. I'm not saying it can't be done but the cost will far out way the gain .... but it will certainly sound nice on the induction side!!! Good luck mate and just to say i have been going through my third childhood assisting and discussing things my lad with the skyline thing ....brilliant! I used to run Escort Mexico's, Lotus Cortina's etc, fully sorted, best leave it now before i get carried away!! I think i can hear the sound of the twin 40's induction in the background ... sorry LOL.

Regards Pete.

Hi,

I've just fitted a K&N kit on my 1.8 vvti. The kit is specific for the engine type and is a direct replacement for the airbox so uses the original fixing points of the OE box. The tube that connects the engine hose and cone filter has a hole that the MAS gets plugged in to. That is the only sensor that needed connection. What is the other sensor you need to attach?

Hi,

I am at the moment testing out a K&N induction kit on my car. I saw one for a good price on eBay and thought I'd see for myself. Education cost money lol as they say and first hand knowledge is best. So here's my observations so far. Its been on for 2 weeks. The first week I didn't pay attention too much as since the Battery was disconnected for 1/2 an hour while I fitted the kit, the ECU was giving funny figures on the dash. Apparently it re-sets when the Battery is unhooked more than 10 minutes and then 're-learns' as it diagnoses the parameters of the actual engine running as it does when the engine is brand new and is being run in. (Not sure about this as I'm not a technician and this info is from the net forums.) As far as economy is concerned, its gone up by 2 MPG driving its usual urban routes for a week so far. Tomorrow I'll be on the motorway just shy of 200 miles and will be observing the MPG return then. As far as performance is concerned, non really.

Non scientific results, used timer and speedo: 0-60 still the same; 60-80 about the same; 60-100 about a second quicker. I say 'about' as times were average and the engine was not always at the same rev from 60 i.e. cruising then accelarating or accelerating from joining the motorway. The engine idles ever so slightly louder, the wife could not be certain when she used it for the first week as I didn't tell her it was in for 'test control' purposes lol. You only really hear it when you hoof the engine, like an exaggerated version of the vvti revved up. The wife actually likes this as it has the drama but non of the danger of an engine that bites as loud as mine barks lol. She's admitted to revving the engine up for a giggle for the last week so maybe the MPG could potentially be even better.

As far as the warranty, just had a waterpump replaced under it no questions asked about the kit. I'm looking to run the kit both summer and winter to make the comparison with the OEM filter. I'll then be adding the figures then see if it even recoups some of the cost of the kit.
