Aygo - Have You Got An Alarm Installed

I have read how easy it is to break into to an Aygo. I know the smart is prone to theft but have not heard any reports about the Aygo. However, since the car does not come with an alarm - did you get one fitted and was it through Mr T

Deadlocks would be a good start; unfortunately Aygos can be broken into in less than 5 seconds

Im getting a Toad or a Clifford installed although nothing gonna stop a thief if they really want your car!

Stealing the car is quite hard due to the immobiliser, but stealing things FROM the car is very easy.

Dealocks may sound like a great solution, but those still won't stop a brick from flying through a window.

Just don't leave anything of value in the car...

I've got an alarm installed on my Aygo blue.

Asked toyota when it was delivered they told me not to do it through them as the take it to a place round the corner as add £100 to make there profit.

So i took it to the alarm specialists near by and got a clifford Viper alarm.

Just gives a bit of peace of mind while I'm at work.

Got alarm fitted by specialist after I bought it.

Extra pin switches, shock sensors, and linked to the central locking. Means car key fob batteries are saved for the immobiliser which is still active,

The alarm was fitted as extra protection leaving the std immobiser working.

I wouldn't bother with an alarm. I doubt they would really deter the thief, all they have to do is brick your window, take the goods and be gone in a few seconds. Just dont leave anything in view

I would be surprised if anyone wanted to steal an Aygo...but theft from [a motor vehicle] can happen to any car (alarm or not). We have a Disclok device that we intend to use on the car and do our best not to leave anything visible in the car. Surely the cost of alarm would show no real insurance benefit as the Aygo is already Group 1. Why spend £200 on an alarm with no benefit?

Well put - you're not going to prevent someone breaking into your car even with an alarm fitted. Keep valuables out of sight or, better still, don't keep them in your car.

The immobiliser doesn't even need batteries! The spare key

has no Battery, but DOES have the chip for the immobiliser.

The little chip inside the key gets powered by the antenna bij the keylock,

this sends a signal to the little chip, which gets power and then sends a

digital signal back to the same antenna. When the codes match the car will start...

Thanks Jan , I stand corrected, having two alarm fobs does have the advantage the other half can get in the car without setting the alarm off and even open the car when she has arms full off shopping.

I have the Toyota alarm fitted soon after buying the car,as I wanted to make sure warranty was not affected by someone else possibly messing up the electrics.

Very pleased with it.Comes with its own remote which works the central locking as well,so the car key is no longer used to work the central locking, just put into the ignition to start the car.

However, not impressed with the dealer fitting it-Listers Nuneaton-took them 6 days to fit it!

Credit to them,it has worked faultlessly since.(And they don't seem to have messed up the electrics!)

Obviously,if a thief is determined to get into the Aygo, esp in the absence of deadlocks, they'll get in easily enough. However, the nice Toyota stickers that come with the alarm may deter an opportunist thief. Also the Aygo is usually parked within earshot,so if the alarm was to be set off, would be there in seconds.

As peeps have already said-most important not to leave anything visible to thieves in the car,or else they'll get in,alarm or no alarm.

I'm looking to fit an alarm to my four year old Aygo as I had enough of careless neighbours scratching my car.

Where did you have it fitted and how much did you pay?

Thanks

I had mine installed at a local alarm/ hi fi specialist - John Kleis Reading. It was £350. I had asked toyota for a quote but it would have been £450 as they make the profit on the alarm but still take it to the same place.

And how much did you save on your Insurnace Premium? That is one heck of an outlay on a Ins. Grp. 1 car - I really don't see the point.

Personally i wont be fitting an alarm for a few reasons:

We had two bigger cars before, both with alarms fitted, both got broken into, so an alarm itself is not always a deterrent.

They are an annoyance. Both to the owner if they malfunction, and to the public when they go off when the owner isn't around.

Also - no one takes any notice of car alarms for the above reason.

As most thieves are opportunists, the best advice is keep it locked, and keep everything out of sight. If you have a satnav, make sure you wipe the "ring" off the windscreen too...and never store your home address as "home" on your satnav...if your satnav gets nicked while your out, thieves might use it against you, go to your home address, and nick something else while your sweeping up broken glass!

Also theres the cost: £350 on an alarm could go towards better insurance, that will cover theft.

All down to personal preference, got nothing against people fitting alarms, this is just my view.

All an alarm does it alert you to some one in the car, but it takes three seconds to smash grab and bail with the goods.

So its still pointless.

The immobiliser prevents to car from being stolen which is my main concern. I just don't leave anything in the car to give some one reason to break in.

The point is: Peace of mind.

I did not do it to save any money on insurance.

Like I said, usually parked within earshot so if it went off someone could be there in seconds. And if it deters one opportunist !Removed! from having a go,then that's fine by me.

As previously mentioned-most important with ANY car is not to leave anything on display.

Cost £200 for Toyota official alarm fitted by dealer -£20 for inconvenience of them taking 6 days to fit-although in all honesty I had a courtesy Yaris for all this time.

ihpj, you may not see the point, but I do.

Also,to address the points others have made-I have had the alarm nearly 2 years and it still works perfectly and there have not been any false alrms even in gale force winds or blizzards.

Having an alarm does not give you a license to leave anything on display in the car or to park in poorly lit risky areas-you will still be calling the automotive glaziers or locksmiths if you do.

All my other cars, and all but my earliest cars have been alarmed, and thankfully since having alarmed cars I have not had them broken into(last one was a Mark2 Escort in 1987 with no alarm when left in a hospital car park away from where normally parked). But then I realise you have to have general awareness of where and how you leave the car parked.

All the cars that I have bought since my 1989 BX GTi have come fully alarmed and immobilized from the show room(apart from the Aygo which is my daughter's and I am lucky enough to share!)

I accept the peace of mind answer. However it seems an excessive and disproportionate response just to be alerted to something amiss with the Aygo?

The alarm does not make one jot of difference to the security of an Aygo and yet, should an instance occur where the alarm has gone off - you will still have to pay your excess and suffer the same inconvenience while the Aygo gets repaired as those of us who do not have alarms.

I use a Steering Wheel Lock (Thatcham Cat. 3 device) - it offers me the same peace of mind, at a fraction of the cost of an alarm...and would argue is a better visual deterrent than an alarm.

Hey-ho, each to their own.

A Steering Wheel Lock will maken it harder to steal the car, but according to the same

Thatcham it's allready quite safe from being stolen. It's being stolen FROM that's pretty

poor on the Aygo and a big yellow disc on your wheel won't change a thing about that...

Getting robbed is an awful feeling and makes you think that you could have done more to prevent it. Only after, you start to consider that security is more than a simple issue. It is a big one.

Talking security takes more than locking doors and windows when you leave home. There are lots of other things to consider like back and front yard, inside and outside lightning, alarms and safes.

Last summer I lost my laptop and was told by law enforcement officers that I would have to bid on my own laptop at auction unless I could prove the item belonged to me. Luckily my brother in law got me a Ghostprint kit for my birthday and my laptop was one of the first items I marked.

http://secure-your-valuables.com/

I hope it will be useful

The officers returned my laptop after providing them with the details of my invisible Ghostprint mark, saving me potentially having to buy my own laptop again!

How many times do you hear a car alarm

How many times do you go to a car that has an alarm going

How many times do you think - oh s... - not again!!!

As others have said, it's just as quick to drop a brick through the window,

the possible advantage we have as Aygo owners is that I suspect it would be

unlikely that the car itself is stolen, just vandalised and any valuables inside removed...

Hi,

I have fitted an alarm to my Aygo, I fitted an Overlay alarm which covers doors , Boot, Bonnet and has a shock sensor. It has two sirens, one fitted under bonnet and one in the car itself, if they do get in they will need an hearing aid with any luck because it hopefully will deafen them.

I fitted it more for my own piece of mind, its called a Falcon Predator XL-RU Upgrade/Overlay Alarm, it basically adds to the Immobilizer, it costs £39-00. It also works with the car key, when you lock the car it is armed and then when opening with the remote car key it disarms, it is programmable with different features, I fitted it myself because I was a mechanic and did wiring as well, the company even sent me a list of connections and the area the wires were at as well as the colour code.

My method would only be beneficial if you knew of a company that would fit it for a reasonable amount,or a friend who would be able and willing. I soldered all the joints to avoid having to hunt for connectors which had become faulty or loose.

As far as alarms go, it is up to the individual, some don't like them, some do. I always have had alarms added to my cars.

regards

Johnhrh

Ofcourse if you can DIY the install then you save £££ - however, by DIY'ing you are unlikely to qualify for the corresponding reduction in your Insurance premium as it wouldn't have been installed by a recognised and approved installer.

At the end of the day, its your money - spend it however you like!
