Im getting a slight noise i can only describe has humming when im driving along. Its more noticable when im coasting. I thought it was wheel balancing or the tyre needed changing but ive had both of them done and its still there.

The only thing ive done to the car is put t sport alloys on, does anyone know of any issues with clearance of the t sport wheels and the 1.6 suspension? Ive visually checked and it dont look like its rubbing

Is it only at certain speeds?

In my Yaris there is a noticeable 'tone' around 62-63mph due to some sort of resonance or something

Not really at a set speed, only more noticable when i come off the accelerator... ive done some diggin around seems it might be the wheel bearings.. but not sure how to find out which one?

anyone with advice on wheel bearings? any how to's?

Does the tone change when going around a bend? If its the bearing the noise will usually vary as the loads on the wheels change.

It could just be your tyre treads; this can happen even if the pressures are correct, but will be greater if they're not.

Or could be brakes binding, or any of a number of causes.

Bearings will cause heat if they're badly worn, though so will binding brakes.

it does get a little deeper when breaking... but around bends if anything the noise dissapears.... the treads have just been replaced, tyres balanced pressure checked etc....

what do you mean by binding brakes???

bearing...tr and listen if its front (bich to change) or back (fairly easy)

when you've ou which end it is, find an empty big carpark.drive at maybe 20mph-ish, and take a hard left turn...it the humming stops, its the left bearing.and vice versa :D

sounds like your bearings have gone. jack up your front end, take it out of gear and grab a wheel as you would grab your steering wheel and see if there is ony wobble. repeat this for the other wheel. dont forget that it could be the rear bearings that are gone.

When you say front end, does that mean to do this i need both front wheels off the ground?? like an mot tester would do?

Findin an empty car park... now thats something i havnt done in a while! lolz :P

Thanks for the replies guys!

yeah just jack up the front wheels and if there is no play in them do the same to the rear wheels to see if it the rear bearings.

done that... i cant feel any excess play... i took off the wheels, calipers and carriers, went to take the disc off and it seemed stuck.. is there a screw holding it down? i had a gen 6 celica when i changed the discs on that, soon as i took the carriers off the disc came off aswell?! i wanted to visually check see if there is any wear around the hubs/bearings :(

not sure about the screw holding in the disc on your motor but i know other cars do have that screw.

Had an mot tester check the bearings today, he says all 4 wheels are fine but there is some play in the drive shaft going into the gearbox?! both sides but more on the drivers side.. he thinks you have to have the gearbox open to tell for sure, does anyone know if this could be the cv joint or bearings in the gearbox?

EDIT.. just been to a gearbox specialist and he had it on the ramp and drove it, he seemed to think the humming noise is coming from the gearbox itself :-| £350 reconditioned inc vat he wants for it.. any thoughts on this people?!?!? should i get a second opinion

^^^ second and third opinion!!!

if the mot tester says the drive goin into the gearbox, double check with him thats not the inner-CV joint, comparatively easy (cheaper!!!) fix...
