  1. Something to bear in mind - all very well upgrading stereos etc - but with my shot hearing, not gong to make the blindest bit of difference. A car is a crap environment anyway for "hi fi quality" listening, with all the variables of road noise, vibrations etc. - everything has to be a compromise. Spend 2 to 4K? I'd be having some nice holidays for that.

  3. So got around to looking at the old Carina E at the weekend, shes a 1996 1.6 gli (4A-FE) Liftback model - one owner since new, 191000 on the clock, my father parked it up about 5 years ago as he picked up another car and its been growing moss ever since. Charged the battery over night but it wasn't strong enough to get the engine to crank so threw it out and got one from the breaker - stuck it in and she started first time! impressive. The wing mirror had been knocked off before it was parked up and tapped on, so got one on ebay, think it cost £5 - got that put on. So its going to be my new project - needs a few more bits before i consider testing her. Engine management light is on so will try get the code from that and see whats up. Exhaust is blowing - the hole is in end section - anyone know if an exhaust from a Generation 1 Avensis would suit? I saw one at the breakers at the weekend. She will be due a belt after being sat there that long. Also the door rubber on drivers door has broken at the top so will need replacing. Breakers yard again i think. Also i noticed after she ran for a while after warm-up, she seemed to mis-fire, struggled. not cutting out just not running right. Maybe an injector? I see that they can give a bit of trouble. I will do as much as i can myself, but my knowledge is basic enough, e.g. oil, filters, plugs, brakes etc - but wouldn't dream of doing a belt change etc. Interior is immaculate in this car. No pets, kids, smokers etc since new. Paint is red so its faded now. Will read up on cutting/rubbing compounds etc to bring her back. Bonnet however has large patches where the lacquer has lifted to will see if i can get another red one or else paint it. Will post a few pics when i get a chance and also keep progress report on here. Thanks for reading.

  6. There isn't. He's got a 4.3. The trouble is you broke the rule of fault finding and did two things at once. Was it the SCVs or was it the EGR? Keep putting the light out and as long as it runs sweet who cares. You can cross that bridge if problems return.

  7. Judicial use of a Dremel is required to make the front mudflaps fit (Hoovie carved mine) so don't be put off fitting them, Andy, more so if no sidesteps will be there as crud catchers.

  8. I always flash my headlights at fellow iQers to a mixed response. Some"get it " and flash back. Many look confused at the madman flashing them. I've lost count of the number of times that I have been approached in car parks by people interested in the car. This leads me to re-iterate a comment I made in another thread in that I am amazed that the iQ isn't more popular in the UK. My only conclusion is people are put off by the small/non existent boot and go no further. It's only once you drive the car you appreciate what a special vehicle it is indeed. People may also think that it is a car only suitable for the city. It's not. We did nearly 350 miles mostly all motorway at the weekend and the car was comfortable and economical beyond belief. Maybe we should just accept it's motoring's best kept secret and those of us in the know are the lucky ones !

  9. The stereo in The new rav is a pioneer unit, I Don't find it too bad, but to get a better sound amped speaker Set up would be the way forward but it can be expensive, depends on your budget, if you spend all day in the rav, then its worth spending it, as you can always remove it to fit in your next vehicle.

  10. If you are talking about the vacuum switch which operates the on the inlet manifold, blocking 4 of the inlet valves, then there has never been any mention of adjustment or settings. If there is a set up procedure, it would be in a workshop manual. I may involve removing the inlet manifold. With the engine on, the switch moves the butterfly valves to set position depending on throttle load and engine speed. Switch off the engine and the switch goes into a 'park' position. You need to observe how the lever moves when using the throttle. When I reconnected my switch back to the lever, I never touched any adjustment. I enquired about the switch and was told it only sold as a complete unit - inlet manifold! This is not an easy subject.

Yes, I remember reading some old posts from you... Infact, it was one of your posts which helped me decide to do it.. :) so thank you... :D
