  1. It seems that VAG are having a few problems. However, if this were a Toyota recall, the good ol' BBC would have it in headlines on their front page. But, seeing as it's not then they've buried it in the middle of the business section. Good job it's only duff electrics & leaking fuel lines and not something really dangerous. Even so they couldn't help having a pop in the last para. "German carmaker Volkswagen has announced a recall of about 2.6 million cars worldwide, including 640,000 in China, a crucial growth market. The recall affects a range of models that may have problems with lights, leaking fuel lines and the wrong type of engine oil. It includes 800,000 of its Tiguan SUV model, one of VW's best-selling models globally this year. The recall is one of the biggest in VW's history. Some 640,000 cars are being recalled in China, where VW produces cars for the local market, as well as selling imports. China is now the biggest car market in the world, an important source of demand for global carmakers looking for growth to offset declines in European car sales. VW says it wants to double its manufacturing capacity in China to four million cars a year by 2018, helping it to become the biggest car company in the world by sales. The recall is a setback for those ambitions, although the faults appear to be relatively minor. There are concerns that the affected Tiguan cars have faulty fuses in their lighting circuits. A further 239,000 Amarok pick-up trucks may have leaking engine fuel lines. Another 1.6 million cars and vans may have problems caused by the use of a synthetic oil in their gear boxes. These include 640,000 vehicles produced in, or imported to, China between 2009 and 2013. VW has already recalled more than 380,000 vehicles in China this year because of gearbox problems. However, the size of the recall is dwarfed by Toyota's recall of 10 million cars in 2009 and 2010, amid fears over sticky accelerator pedals and floor mats."

  2. You'd want to check out the poverty spec cars they dump on us here in Ireland! My GenII was an English import. My present GenIII is an English import. I have two friends who drive Lexus LS430's, and those cars are English imports too. The kicker here is, not only is it cheaper to import from the UK than buy local, but the spec is always that much higher as well.

  3. I searched around for a new battery, they ranged from £45 to over £100 but the only problem was none of them fitted properly, all of them were 20mm too high so that the lock bar at the top would have to be modified (bent). I decided to ring local Toyota garage (Dingles Norwich) and they had one the exact size for £88, I went and picked it up yesterday, put it in, fits perfectly and now the car goes like a dream. The only thing I lost was the time!! I was quite surprised the sat nav even kept phone information and recent destinations in the memory. Once again thanks for all the help and advice.

  4. How to replace a Toyota Avensis (T27) Radio/CD player W53828 with a Toyota navigation unit B9012 First disconnect the vehicle battery. There is a 20 pin connector plugged into the back of Radio/CD W53828 with the following pin out: 1. Empty 2. Empty 3. Yellow 4. Empty 5. Empty 6. Purple 7. Pink 8. Light Blue 9. Empty 10. Empty 11. White & Black 12. Empty 13. Empty 14. Empty 15. Red 16. White 17. Black 18. Orange 19. Dark Blue 20. Empty Next there is an 8 pin connector plugged into the back of Radio/CD W53828 with the following pin out: (this connector will not plug into the back of the Toyota Navigation unit B9012) 1. Blue 2. White 3. Black 4. Empty 5. Red 6. Purple 7. Empty 8. Empty The other connections are the same in both units. If you only have the Toyota Navigation unit B9012 without any of the connectors you will have to buy a speed signal cable (€10 approx.) that fits into the grey connector on the B9012, part No. PZ445-00333-04 and a GPS antenna (€25 approx.), part No. PZ445-00333-05. The GPS antenna will fit directly into the back of the B9012. If you bought the speed signal cable from a Toyota Dealer it will have 3 wires (Red, Purple & White, and Green). If you got it from a donor car it will have 2 wires (Red wire and a Yellow wire). Cut the Yellow wire that goes to pin 3 of the 20 pin connector. Connect the end that is coming from the vehicle wiring harness to the purple & white cable of the speed signal cable you purchased (or the yellow wire if you got it from a donor car). The yellow wire that is still attached to the 20 pin connector must be connected to the blue wire that is in pin 1 of the 8 pin connector. Then make the following connections: Move the white wire in pin 2 of the 8 pin connector to pin 4 of the 20 pin connector. Move the black wire in pin 3 of the 8 pin connector to pin 5 of the 20 pin connector. Move the red wire in pin 5 of the 8 pin connector to pin 13 of the 20 pin connector. Move the purple wire in pin 6 of the 8 pin connector to pin 14 of the 20 pin connector. You should now have all the Bluetooth and navigation functionality on the B9012 unit and in the proper place on the steering wheel controls. Now the Rear View or Reverse camera. If you got a rear view camera the connector for it is already inside the panel in the boot lid. However this cable only goes up as far as a grey block connector inside the left hand kick panel beside your left leg in the foot well of the passenger seat (in the case of a RHD). The connector in the boot lid will have 4 wires inside a black outer casing - White, Red, Black, and Blue. The insulation on the blue wire may only extend up the cable a few centimetres. At the other end inside the kick panel it may have orange or green insulation. This wire needs to be extended from here up to the back of the Toyota navigation unit B9012. At the back of the Toyota navigation unit B9012 make the following connections: Red wire to pin 1 of the 20 pin connector. Black wire to pin 2 of the 20 pin connector. White wire to pin 11 of the 20 pin connector (there is already a white & black wire in this position, remove it and insulate the end of it). Blue (Orange or Green) to pin 12 of the 20 pin connector. Now extend the red wire from the speed signal cable connector down to the back of the glove box. Behind the glove box there is a panel with various block connectors, relays, fuses etc. On this panel three of the block connectors are held in with black clips over the block connectors. The middle one of these block connectors has a red wire near the bottom. This is the reverse signal cable. Connect the red wire from the speed signal cable to this wire. Your reverse camera should now work.

  5. Yes it's safe. I had an O2 sensor die on me and I drove around for a week before getting it sorted. No adverse effects at all.

  10. OP has a petrol model and should be a 4.3 so definitely 3 sections, but middle section does have big box and is about £1100 before discount. I paid £786.47 after discount at Westlands Toyota. First section has cats and bolts to manifold, rear section is £300 as fixed price at Toyota. David

  12. Mate I'm certainly not driving that distance without an agreement.... There is no way I would miss describe my car I mean what would be the point... What I asked for was an agreement based upon my description.. In all honesty I probably under described the thing !Once I've traveled that far I'm a captive audience and almost obliged to buy the car. I was asked at least 6 times to place a deposit and said each time I would only do this when terms could be agreed. The phone call to seal this did not come this morning and so far my call to them has gone unanswered. This of course is the problems when trading at distance. They're playing the usual car sales games with you Charlie. I'd leave the ball in their court now, definately wouldn't call them again. If they don't sell it within the next month, wouldn't mind betting you'll get a phone call.

  13. According to the Haynes manual the 2000 model year only had 2 sensors. The 2001 onwards models had 4 so perhaps yours is a 2001 my. If you look in the engine bay on the passenger side you will see 2 connectors one above the other that go to the sensors. The lower one goes to B1S2 , mine has a black plug whereas B1S1 has a grey one. It's fairly easy to see the connectors I am referring to as you can see the top sensors. Follow that cable to the location of the post cat sensor , you can't see it without taking the cover underneath off I don't think. I have had both B1 sensors replaced. P0141 is the usual heater circuit issue , there should be 15 ohms between the black cables but they go o/c.

  20. Is yours a 4.3 RAV - from the date I would think so? Ours is a Jan 2007 XT4 petrol 4.3 and the exhaust is in 3 sections - I needed the middle section replaced. I decided to go for a genuine part from Toyota - it cost £786.47 fitted and that was with a discount (I think because it was fully serviced with Toyota and only 30000 miles). It now sounds slightly quieter and seems to be slightly more fuel efficient. A lot of money but peace of mind. The cats are in the front section and hopefully unlikely to go. The rear section is much cheaper. David

  21. This is a problem we see more often now as the cars are getting a bit older.... One of the problems is the cost.. It is a Toyota only part as none of the aftermarket exhaust manufacturers have produced the large center box which has the oxidization catylist in front of it. You can have a stainless exhaust made up but on the cars with Dcat its very possible the back pressure wont be correct and it could end up throwing up fault codes and refusing to do its job correctly. Mt exhaust failed in January this year and I had a stainless one made up but had it removed quite soon after as the booming and resonance noise was unbearable on the motorway or travelling at speed. Stainless systems are usually noisier than mild steel ones. The best price I have seen for replacement was Voyager T180s which was from memory around £850 . Full retail is close to 1200 quid fitted by your Toyota dealer... OR you can go the stainless route as I mistakenly did . Some have done this and been happy. Cost of that would be circa 350....

  23. PS - Take your time driving up there. When I drove down about 250 miles to pick up my White SR150 in a similar situation (PX on unseen trade-on), it cost me more then the ££ cost to change - 3 points on my license with one camera in Northallerton, plus a 're-education' evening due to another camera 40 miles further north! Too bad they weren't doing a BOGOF, David!

  27. HI, Welcome to the club... Enjoy If you look into the engine compartment on the nearside down by the bulk head you will be able to see 2 gearbox linkage cables, with a bit of luck you have lost one of the retaining clips which is an easy and cheap solution.

  28. It was ages ago I was here at the forum. Last night when I was on my way home from town the drive belt for the generator, water pump and air condition snapped. I know that one should stop as soon as possible when that happens, but I drove the car back home anyway. It was not any good idea to walk >10 km in light rain with the guitars and stuff. When I had about 5 km more to drive the temp guage was above max. I drove a detour from the motorway to lower the speed and to get more oppurtunities to park the car for the night. The temperature got down when I drove slower. I hope the engine didn't get any damage. I knew the belt was bad and I had planned to change it when I will do the service wich will happen within 2 weeks, but I had not bought it yet, I had to use the bike to work today and on my way home I stopped at our local Toyota dealer. They actually gave me 10% discount on the new belt!!! It is not often I am pleased with their reltion with the customer, but this was good. It was not much space to get the belt on the sprockets, but it is there now and the car seems to work fine again. I will see with a few days if I loose some coolant. If I do I know that the high temperature last night was no good for the engine.

  30. Fantastic write up, I'm sure it'll be a godsend for the next person. As a side note my 2012 Avensis came with Touch and Go, which doesn't have voice dialling for the phone (you need Touch and Go Plus for that). Ironically my 2009 with the basic stereo (like the one you just removed) did. It's got the button on the steering wheel and the display says "this function not available" or similar when you press it. I assume your new kit has voice dialling...does it work ok? And may I ask where you got the replacement and approx costs, if it's not too cheeky?

  33. The alarm drives me nuts too. I have to undo my seat belt to get through the security barrier my work's car park, and I don't have time to do it up again before the barrier goes down, therefore I drive through the car park with an extremely annoying and loud shrieking. I'd love to be able to shut it up. I also find !Removed! annoying the 2 loud bleeps that you get when you get out of the car and leave the engine running, as I often have to do to let the kids out. Can this be disabled?

  35. There were two choices when I changed mine, either Toyota genuine which is made by aisin or a ADL blueprint is also available. I went for the genuine. I changed the master cylinder due to clutch being heavy, after doing so we had to bleed the system, then the clutch wouldn't return to the top whilst driving, I had to lift up pedal up with my foot, so I changed the slave cylinder. I have posted a link below there is a pdf file by pete, please download it will help you regarding the clutch and its parts. http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/120775-05-avensis-clutch-pedal-squeak-l700/

  39. I worked for a Toyota Dealer from 1998 until 2001. There were a few clutch problems with early model avensis, (mainly noise and judder related), mostly it was the springs on the clutch cover but I changed my fair share of flywheels that were badly "high spotted" too. Only way to be sure is to whip the box out and have a look! I did so many that I was once timed changing a clutch and flywheel assembly and it only took 57 minutes from the car going on the ramp to driving back out again!!!!!!!! I have done 5 avensis clutch's in an 8 hour shift before when there was a re-call for a squealing noise and were repaired under the warranty. As for the high biting point, try checking for leaks from the clutch slave cylinder, just peeling back the dust cover should do, and if not leaking try bleeding the clutch hydraulics. If it's stil high my money would be on a combination of a worn friction plate and possible weak springs on the cover. ;)

  40. You don't give model of car ? But presuming it's a Avensis Mk 2, pollen filter is as stated in above posting. Washer bottle pumps behind o/s/f wing & inner wheel liner both side by side, rear RED top pump for rear wash/wipe if fitted & BLACK top pump for front wash/wipe.
