  1. I can only offer an answer to this question and re-iterate what Colin has said above: The short answer is no, but you will do no harm in doing so. Having said that you will not get the best out of the hybrid system using B Mode in the way you have described. Let me explain, B Mode recaptures less kinetic energy by using engine braking to waste energy instead. The idea of B Mode is to take longer to fill the battery by regenerating less, the flip side is that it uses engine braking to compensate for the loss of regen braking. The overall braking effect is greater than just regeneration with foot off the accelerator. The correct use for B Mode is on long downhill gradients. The way to know if you should use B Mode is if you descend a gradient in D mode and your battery is not full by the time you get to the bottom of a downhill gradient, then you do not need to use B Mode. It is ok to ride your brakes (a no-no in a conventional car), as long as you are using regen braking only, to control your speed. This is why, as noted in Colin's post, the manual says "occasional" use when descending steep hills to aid with braking. For normal driving, and especially braking for lights, etc, use your foot brake, not B Mode, as you will recapture more kinetic energy that will otherwise be lost. As long as you have not filled the "regen" section of the HSI, you will not be using any disc brakes. If you are using disc brakes, it is because system needs needs to, to give you the braking you are requesting (i. e. you are braking hard!). The aim here is to use regen as much as possible and use the disc brakes as little as possible, so long gentle braking is what you are going for, where safe to do so. Hope this helps. PS I have visited Croatia and enjoyed your country immensely. Highlights were Plitvice Lakes National Park in Plitvička and Dubrovnik. We spent 4 days in Zadar, relaxing and exploring the surrounding area.

  2. If everything was working ok earlier and not working now the unit might have got its knickers in a twist (technical term). Try disconnecting the battery (make sure the radio is not coded) for a few mins, then reconnect and try again.

  5. High depreciation? I've just looked on Autotrader for an Auris hybrid and a high mileage example is on at £6,700, the next cheapest is £7,000 for a few examples then upwards from there. That's not bad. If you want a car that does hold it's value, then the gen3 Prius is great. I paid £17,500 for mine in 2009 and you won't find one on Autotrader for less than £8k, and those have galactic mileage. I think the Toyota hybrids hold their value well and your depreciation concerns unfounded. The cheapest Toyota hybrid on Autotrader just now is £1,800 for a 2002 car with 100k miles, the next is £2,150 for a 2003 Prius with 198k miles!?! I'd say they're holding their value rather nicely. A 12 year old Focus sized car would normally be £500. If you're still not convinced, then I fear you never will be.

  6. Sounds like it could possibly be something as simple as a loose Battery Cable (Negative Pole)?

  7. Wow Nicolai. You still here? I thought by now you would have bought a car already. ANY car. Honestly, you must be driving people mad in here. Bye!

  8. I get up to speed as quick as possible then cruise at the speed within the limit of the road with as little gas as possible in my HSD Auris, I have averaged 53MPG since May, and this was 58MPG before the winter kicked in. And I think I have to say to Nicolai... Just buy the car for Pete's sake, life really is TOO SHORT.

  9. Hi Nicolai take no notice of Grumpy old man, keep asking questions thats what this forum is about, if you don't ask you will never find out and along the way you help dispell some of the misconceptions about the prius.

  10. Are you sure you use more fuel? It would be interesting if you have test data. ECO mode will change the accelerator pedal mapping so you have to press it further down to get the same acceleration but it shouldn't use any more fuel. With the Toyota HSD, the accelerator pedal is 'drive by wire' and is not mechanically connected to the petrol engine, so pressing it further down does not always equate to 'use more gas'. Wow, I'll just drive around with my foot flat down all the time then if it doesn't use more fuel. Whether it's fly by wire or or not makes no difference, more pedal uses more fuel. Test data not needed, it's common sense, but if you want some look at the instant mpg readout. Press the pedal down more and the instant mpg goes down. Der !

  11. So how was the problem resolved? Did they fit a new p/s pump or just reset the ECU? Also you say this problem is quite common on the Yaris, but i think it's only the French built one's with electric p/s that suffer. The Mk1's like mine have hydraulic p/s and were Japanese (who might just slightly do a better job of building cars than the French) bulit.

  12. The car is now sorted, the garage did try to read the faults codes but as the fault was on the low voltage side there where no faults to report, the independant garage did consult with Toyota uk and then charged in acordance with autodata, cant fault the labour charges but the parts cost is !Removed! high, anyway its all paid for via the warranty. oh and this is a fairly common fault according to toyota, it affects the Yaris and the RAV 4

  13. Remove the dash?? Are they having a laugh? The ecu is checked with a diagnostic tool that plugs into the ecu under the dash beside the fuse board. If there is a fault then it will have a code which can be checked against a list of codes for the yaris. I think there's one here iirc. Whatever you do, don't take these guys word for it too easily. It may just be a loose connection and they could fix that in minutes while charging you a fortune. Best of luck.
