  1. As a relative newbie to the Hybrid world I thought I'd give an observation to this. I used to spend a lot of time in the iQ forum because I had an iQ, but now I spend most of my time here in the Hybrid / Toyota Prius forum, because i've a Yaris Hybrid Excel. I admit I've never really looked at the Yaris Forum (no offence to those lovely people there ), because I find but my interest is primarily in the Hybrid aspects of the car rather than the Yaris itself. I'm finding there's a lot of Hybrid technology discussions here re subjects common to all the Toyota Hybrid cars that would be lost in the fog of the other model specific forums, much to the detriment of getting the best out of the hybrid cars, so as a result I'm finding this forum much more useful than the Yaris one at the moment. I may pop in there now and then if I'm looking for something specific to all Yaris's but probably more likely to spend time here. It has in many ways kindled an interest in other Hybrids, never thought about it in the past but I'd love a Prius+ now Just my thoughts if that helps ...

  2. You're not the first and unlikely to be the last to have had 'fun' using a normally experienced mechanic who has no hybrid experience. The best one is when inexperienced mechanic does an oil change - after stopping car on ramp they assume because the engine is not running the car is switched off (especially as keyless confuses them), so they empty the oil out. The car is sitting in Ready mode and suddenly detects the drop in oil temperature (because it's no longer there), so fires the engine up to warm up. Bang, clatter, bang, pop - unless the mechanic was quick to switch the car off. Many a Prius has met a premature end this way - at least on the US forums where skimping on oil change costs is a national obsession.

Little bit more info released over the weekend: Due to new Euro VI regulations about to come into force last factory order for current Rav 2.0/2.2D4D is the 10th April, Toyota GB has placed a final order for stock of common models that is expected to last until the end of the year. This is because the new model Rav will be available with the recently announced 2.0 BMW Diesel engine and the current 2.0/2.2 no longer meet Euro VI requirements and are not going to re-engineered to do so. As the new Hybrid will be 4WD the new diesel will only be offered as a 2WD Petrol 2.0 vvti will continue as normal and will be re-engineered to meet the Euro VI requirements Hybrid will be fitted with a 2.5 petrol engine and two hybrid motors 1 front 1 rear similar to the Lexus NX300h giving 4WD More info will be released on the 2nd April and first orders for the new model will start in September after the Frankfurt motor show.

  4. Car was sorted at about the same time grumpycabbie posted his reply ( thanks again fella)....but I now tend to agree about using toyota to service...for peace of mind if nothing else. We all invest thousands of pounds in our cars, and it`s all for nothing if its sat on the drive but unable to start it.

  5. Ben that wasn't the figures for a full track or rally Scoobie, you'd be talking 0-60 in the low 4's then. The thing that gets me is when ppl want to compare apples with oranges ie they want to compare turbo diesels with non-turbo petrols. Fact is that diesel engines are less powerful than petrols by about 20% so I say compare like with like and see how they stack up. I was a petrol and diesel mechanic and I was in road haulage for a time working on a fleet with AEC, Gardner, Leyland and Perkins engines in the 6 litre to 11 litre range. I've stripped and rebuilt more of these engines than the proverbial hot dinners and I've lain out on the road in winter clearing out waxed up filters and lift pumps with diesel running down my arms. I hat the smell of diesel now and I hate following behind the myriad of taxis, cars, vans and buses that spew out their smoke and N02 fumes for me to breathe.

  7. At one of the "Prius meets" in the early days, I sat next to a guy in the cafe who'd swapped from a Subaru Impreza WRX (0-62 in around 5 sec) to a Prius. I asked him if he missed it, and he said just occasionally he missed the exhaust roar, but mostly enjoyed the tranquility and graceful progress of the Hybrid. And if you're thinking he was getting on in years, I believe he was late twenties or early thirties! [he did add he rents one at a track day once or twice a year to get his petrol head fix!]

  8. On summer tyres, 250 mile round trip, taking things gently and doing 60-70 on speedo where allowed, 68-74 on the display. On a 500 or so mile tankful, the display is 3½-4 mpg over, so I suspect on half that distance the optimism is nearer 2.

  9. If fan wear due to stop/start of the electric motor was a problem it would have become apparent when airconditioning became common in cars, Ie. the early 1960s. !! It's a straw man theory .

  10. We're not talking overly high torque levels though, its a radiator cooling fan, not a large heavy industrial cooling tower fan - it all needs to be put into perspective. The running cost of it cycling rather than being constant and reducing fuel consumption will be far less than any potential wear and replacement costs as a result - the fan motor will normally outlast a car, and the relay will be a few £ at most normally if that fails due to mechanical wear.

  12. SWMBO has a Gen 2, I had a Gen 3. Gen 2 feels more solid, is more comfy and contrary to what Toyota say, is definitely quieter that the Gen 3 road noise wise. Gen 3 is more economical, steers and handles better than the Gen 2.

  13. I don't see there will be any change to the forums - the current line-up seems to work. Currently members who have hybrids can, and do, post in either their model specific forum (Auris, Yaris, etc) or the Hybrid/Toyota Prius forum. Often topics can contain information or discussion which is equally valid for both hybrids and non-hybrids, and for this reason, I think that members who only visit one forum are limiting their use of the forum, and are reducing their opportunity to provide useful responses for others, and to add to the relevant discussion. However, where duplicate threads are raised, then moderators may take action to reduce the duplication - by moving, merging or locking duplicates/linking to the original thread.
