  1. Hi, Afraid as far as I know the Clutch is classed as a standard wear item like brakes and tyres and not covered by warranty, new or secondhand. At UK Toyota dealers they have two prices, the standard one, which yours sounds like and the lower cost Opti Fit which uses ( lets say) less expensive parts designed to compete with other high street garages; though no idea if your dealership offers this, but worth asking. That said , you might find other garages offering a lot cheaper prices with decent generic parts being used like Blueprint etc.

  2. On 1st March it is the fifth anniversary of my Yaris' first registration and the end of the 5 year warranty. I am planning on keeping the car for a while longer and considering Toyota's extended warranty. I do have written conformation that the CVT is covered in spite of that not being mentioned in their list of what is covered. Does anyone have any experience of his warranty? e.g. have you made a claim using it and was that claim successful? We do read that extended warranties are usually not worth it, primarily third party car warranties where every effort is made to wriggle out of any claims. e.g. not covered, wear and tear etc.. Is the Toyota warranty any different?

  3. I've been away from the computer since the last time, but not away from the car. Which makes a change! So on the Thursday, it was quite cold. -1 degrees outside. I don't think the car ever defrosted itself: I tackled the other driveshaft, and that came out with no bother at all. I tried to attack the other part of the driveshaft that was stuck in the gearbox but it wasn't budging. But here they both are anyway, sat on the bench ready for work: On the Saturday I attacked the gearbox. Took about 5 hours and I got to the point where I was going to take the gearbox out. It got dark, and even with 2 torches I couldn't find out why it wouldn't move. The lack of my long pry bar didn't help. But on Sunday morning I found my crowbar (close enough to my pry bar) and it came off within 10 minutes. Once it was on the bench I attacked the other part of the driveshaft with a block of wood and my lump hammer. And it FINALLY came off. Didn't have much time on Sunday so I turned my attention to a spot of rust on the gearbox. I remember seeing it last time I saw it, but I think it's gotten worse since. Either way I attacked it with a wire brush to remove the rust and loose paint. So it went from this: To this: Sprayed it with brake cleaner, but then I had to go. I checked it again this evening and it's still damn for something. Well it is cold, and I've no kitchen roll to dry it off, so that's going to wait until tomorrow. I've got some high temperature paint so I'll paint that on it when it's dry enough. One thing I've done since last Tuesday was taking the bolts from the brakes I took off and put them in a vinegar and salt solution and left them to soak until tonight. They started off like this: To this: For some context, here's one bolt that was rusted that I took out: Through to this after I brushed it: All I was ever interested in is removing the rust from the threads, as they were a bit difficult to get off. So I'm quite happy with the end result. For those playing at home, the tin to the right of my hand is water mixed with bicarbonate of soda, which is going to neutralise the acidity of the Vinegar and salt solution. The salt, by the way, is meant to increase the acidity of the vinegar. I've started another group of bolts, this time from when I dropped the gearbox off the car. Here they are to start with: Not too bad, but here they are in the other tin - same vinegar and salt solution although I think I've used more salt this time. The smell, with all of this, isn't pleasant. Imagine vinegar, strong vinegar, with a metallic smell to it. It's odd really. But it's quite cheap to remove the rust using this method, and not completely toxic either. Plus it's a good use for the bicarbonate of soda I buy and then forget about!

  4. Thanks John, and yes it's an ever growing parts list lol, but I really do want to keep this car. That's a good point on the anti roll bush knock, as the car is lowered a fair bit and they are more than likely very old. I will also check out the link and other parts you mention, many thanks.

  5. Even on brand new, 0 miles cars, the clutch has a limited warranty across all brands. Often something like 6 months cover is provided by the new car warranty.

  6. Not so much a question but an observation: I put my wifes 2005 corolla 1.6 hatchback in for its MOT check this morning expecting a long list of problems to be solved. The car itself is running very very well but with these inspections its always the unseen that catches you out in my experience. I was hit with a bill for spare parts of ... zero. I pay for the cleaning of the engine, under body and the headlights and that is it. Not another thing required... Honestly, I know the whole 'throwing the toyota off a big building and it starting to prove how tough it is top gear sketch' is played to death but Im starting to believe that in truth these things never !Removed! die. Ever. We service it once a year, I drive the nuts off it day to day and it never misses a beat. Are the new ones as good??

  8. Ooof! You have some wants list, my friend... Sure you dont have AntiRollBush knock - where they go thru the eye - at the back? I think I have posted a link to the BIG calipers, 295mm off the Avensis I believe. MotorHog must be best for panels. Agreed - you cant do anything with suspension bushings (unless listed for the car) without the parts in bits... No use on a daily Keep it up M8 👍 2sav

  9. You may also come across the odd 2.0 VVTi or Valvematic. The 2.0 VVTi didn't suffer the same potential oil consumption issues as the 1.8 VVTi so you could go a bit earlier & is a bit more powerful to go with the auto box to ameliorate Alan's comment about performance in the T25 but it will be thirstier on fuel. The 2.0 Valvematic in the T27 doesn't have that much more power than the 1.8 Valvematic & again, are thirstier than the 1.8 which is why Toyota UK eventually stopped offering it in the UK.

  10. I absolutely agree, but since they were 20 years late with heated mirrors and at least 10 years late with electric folding mirrors, I'm not holding my breath. When the Hybrid System was launched in 1997 it was so advanced (and still is very impressive) so it's hard to understand why Toyota are so backward in some other areas (an electric heated front windscreen would be welcome too).

  14. Finally got to use my new Wax Work gear today on the Yaris as now the snows gone and done ***** ran me off the road so I had to put the car through the bushes so from front to back on the passenger side took some heavy scratches. After a full day on her and a few new little trinkets there 90% out. New carbon bee sting, tailored mats, GR Badges and new tyres going on Wednesday 👍

  15. Got the keys for this today. What a great car, it also had a couple of extra things such as a cobra exhaust and a carbon induction system has a awesome noise. just a test drive tho I'd pooped in for a cuppa with mate.

  17. Clutch life depends hugely on how its used. 40k already on the car and you have added another 10k in just 5 months, so 50k in total. That's probably not an unreasonable life in itself, particularly if the car has seen a lot of town centre stop start driving. There would be zero chance of a warranty claim with those figures imo.
