  1. My reference on this: In about 1984 (!), I was trying to help out with a Renault 16 TX auto (1647cc, pushrod, petrol with carb., obviously no cat.). It had been overfilled with 4.5 litres (a gallon can) of unnecessary oil, as the owner was checking the auto transmission dipstick whilst filling the engine with engine oil - then wondering why it didn't seem to show any increase. It did run, and had travelled perhaps 10 miles, probably in heavy traffic, before I got to drain all the extra out. The amount of smoke that came out of the exhaust, especially on 'kickdown', was simply staggering. The world behind just disappeared behind in the smoke. The oil did eventually burn off and the car ran ok afterwards. It was sold not much later.

  2. I did as Mike says above on an old Corolla E11 years back with duct tape, and then took a photo in case I needed to make some in years to follow. Where you end up blocking the headlamp will not be where you initially expect! Also, drape a coat (or disconnect) over the headlamp you are not working on to make the beam you want to see more obvious. Your angular headlamps will be more of a challenge, I reckon. To remove the 'uptick' on the Corolla beam pattern the masks ended up like this, fwiw :-

  3. I've just taken delivery of a 2019 Corolla Design 1.8 Hybrid TRK. TRK indeed! The dealer suggested that if I couldn't use the useless tyre repair kit, I instead use the breakdown cover if I have a puncture but in rural Scotland that could be a very long wait for a repair. I was quoted silly money from the dealer for a space saver steel wheel so I found the wheel geometry somewhere and it's the same as an Auris Space saver. So I purchased the Auris one and it fits both the wheel studs and under the boot floor. I placed the order on Friday at 4pm and delivered via DHL the following Tuesday. Purchased from The Wheel Shop. https://www.thewheelshop.co.uk/toyota-auris-space-saver-spare-wheel-17-and-tool-kit.html Don't forget you'll need the retaining bolt.

  4. It's not an option on the Design for some weird reason that I have never had a suitable answer for. Dealership does not know why and I did not get an answer from a query I sent to Toyota UK.

  5. Just fitted roof bars to mine on the basis I would need it to fit all of my camping gear into the car. Turns out the car was so large it swallowed everything! Not sure if I'm allowed to say where I got them from but the site had roof and boxes in the name, they had the 2019 toyota rav-4 in their lookup tables. Chose Cruz Optiplus steel bar variant. Not the prettiest fitting, but fitted well and perfect for the aluminium tray that I purchased for it from ebay. The main problem for me was the fixed bar position, which meant my existing foldable roof box couldn't be fitted. (Bars too far apart)

  6. I ordered my 1.8 Design Hatchback at the very first opportunity it became available at my local dealer - February 20th. I had to wait around 3 months for delivery even though it was being built less than 20 miles away at Burnaston (Derbys)! I chose the Denim Blue colour so had to wait for when that was in the production schedule. The default white would have been around a month earlier. Car arrived at the dealer on May 30th. Due to my being on holiday I didn't get my mitts on it until June 10th. So a stupidly long wait for me but boy was it worth it.. I am beyond happy with it. It is such a joy to drive. Coming from a 2010 VW Polo this is so luxurious and packed with so much great tech. I love it, and the colour is great, I'm so glad I went for something other than white. I hope/expect you will be delighted with your new car too, Si - just two days to go from the sound of it! Enjoy!!

  7. Just as a point of interest for folks looking to buy a new Corolla - a space saving wheel is an alternative, and FREE option to the standard offering of a puncture repair kit at the time of ordering. This does mean the loss of a few inches of boot space as the floor is a little higher to accommodate the wheel so you need to think about what's more important to you when it comes to ordering - wheel or the space. I chose the wheel option for my 2019 Corolla and am not missing the extra boot space (yet!). I wasn't offered this option, by the way... I had seen it mentioned on the Toyota website and had to specifically ask for it when I placed my order but it was all arranged with no quibble.

  8. Hi Pete, As I thought then, but thanks for the feedback anyway. I have had my car for nearly a week now and although it took a while to get the phone tethering and mytoyota app sorted out I am finding the built in nav quite good apart from the screen resolution compared with by BMW that has now gone back to the leasing company. Enjoying the car and MPG ! Martin

  9. Refurbished ones could be a better solution, some places might have them on stock will just give you the new one in exchange for your old one and some cash. Might be a budget solution, and better than buying used one which might also die in near future. As Mike169 said above, the battery could probably be affected by this.

  10. Toyota stopped exporting the IQ to Europe over a period of time due to sales volumes falling - certainly the case with the UK. See Never really caught on in the US (sold there as the Scion IQ) due to small size, and discontinued there in 2015. Production ceased in December 2015.

  11. I think 31 miles might well be WLTP. That's about right for reasonable warm-weather driving. Winter is obviously a completely different story. The best I've managed in real range remains 36 miles. I am currently getting a reliable 34-35 every day. However, the range indicator is insisting every morning that I'll be able to go nearly 42 miles which is utter nonsense. Just for reference, I did some experimentation with manually resetting the on-board miles per kWh figure (which for no good reason won't reset with all the other economy figures) and found that a real range of 35 miles equates to driving at an indicated 6 miles per kWh. Something is clearly shonky there, as the usable capacity of the PHV is 7kWh which means I should actually be going those 42 miles. Clearly the miles per kWh figure is as inflated as the on-board mpg readout!

  12. Press the power button once without your foot on the brake, that will bring up accessory mode. The radio is now available (along with other media sources). Press it a second time without your foot on the brake and you'll get "ignition" mode, where the ventilation system and other electrics will be available. Press it again and everything goes off. Note that you wouldn't want to do this for very long as the 12v battery isn't large like it is in non-hybrid cars.

  13. Yes - there's a threaded hole right underneath the carpet where you would expect it to be. Small operation with a pair of scissors :) I was fortunate in that I had a retaining bolt left over from a previous vehicle (Kia) that was the required length/thread size.

  14. We owned a 2011 Auris 1.6 valvematic MMT semi auto. It's by far the worst auto I've ever driven. Don't buy one.

  15. The first generation Auris (2007-2012) petrol and diesel auto used Toyota's Multi Mode Transmission (MMT), which, as you say, is a manual gearbox with an automated clutch. They can be problematical and expensive to repair. The hybrid, however, uses an e-CVT transmission, which is far more reliable. If you're definitely seeking a first generation auto, the hybrid would be the one to go for. The second generation Auris non-hybrid auto (December 2012 onwards) uses a CVT transmission. Moved to the Auris club.

  16. Toyota customer service said " that's what the warranty is for" Have they not learned or have they forgotten that quality is about getting it right first time and every time thereafter. Sorry looks very much like another retrograde step for Toyota.
